Olivia Chow unleashes her campaign web site & video

Posted by Staff / March 13, 2014

olivia chow mayorOlivia Chow officially joined the 2014 Mayoral race when she filed her registration papers yesterday. And even though she doesn't hold her initial press conference until this morning at 11am her team has already come out blazin' with the launch of the campaign web site and Olivia Chow for Mayor video.

While the video isn't as catchy as ones we've seen in the past, it's not as dull as John Tory's. Chow is all smiles as she plugs her experience and focus on families, job creation and better transit. She ends with "It's time for a new Mayor. It's time to build a better city together."

Ford nation love Robs low budget campaigning. It just shows how he is a normal humble guy, as opposed to some "uppity downtowner" with their internets n stuff.
NuclearFamily / March 13, 2014 at 07:29 am
She wants to put children and families at the heart of the city first. Sorry singles, hipsters, those without children or partners this doesn't apply to you. No improvements for you!
Jamie / March 13, 2014 at 07:38 am
Let's all use our tax dollars to give kids breakfast in school. No reason why parents should be responsible for feeding their own kids. Its easier on the parents budget if you pay for kids breakfast out of your taxes then if parents have to pay for it themselves like our parents had to do.
Spend. Spend. Spend. Tax. Spend. Spend. Spend.

No food for kids! All food goes to Ford! Rob to go dood to door every day! Deco money CAN buy the mayoralty. Stickers 'n Signs! Ingerited money rules! Why work if you are born with a cement spoon in your mouth? Braveheart! Mel Gibson! Alcoholism! Bigotry! Constipation!
Understandin Rob 'n Doug / March 13, 2014 at 09:05 am
So, according to Doug, when the snow melts, Feces Nation will march over the hill and conquer Toronto, just like in Braveheart. Does that mean Rob is going to be drawn and quartered like Mel's character in the movie? Nick Kouvalis is laughing at Doug-from the Tory offices. Do Rob 'n Doug find it difficult to talk 'n think because of the silver spoon in their mouths?

iSkyscraper / March 13, 2014 at 09:40 am
Note the distinct lack of orange as she tries to distance herself from the NDP. The Obamacized "C" is a bit much though.

I really wonder where she will land on the nice-nasty spectrum. With Ford around, playing nice may not pay. Will she call out Ford's lies aggressively? And perhaps more importantly, will she nail Stintz and Tory for, at various times, being Ford enablers?

Things just got a lot more interesting.

I think the Media and public should be just as scrutinizing of all the candidates as they are on Rob Ford.

Its the Candidates and the people who work for them that can control how their party plays whether nice or nasty. And the candidates should let their followers know how they with to play.
Simon / March 13, 2014 at 10:08 am
Is she the best person for the job? Definitely.
Will the suburbs vote for her? Probably not.

There's two different sets of priorities in the GTA and those needs all need to be addressed. Olivia Chow has done an amazing job as a leader in the Toronto core for years but I'm afraid that might come back to bite her in the ass when people in Mississauga, Oakville, Scarborough etc all have a say in who runs Toronto. This is why the GTA should be abolished.

As much as I still think this is Soknacki's election I would remind anyone who is afraid of a Chow mayor of the same fact that I held close to my heart when Ford one. She will only be one vote. her winning the election will not be the end of the world for fiscal conservatives.
Tony / March 13, 2014 at 10:15 am
She should have stayed in Ottawa, the suburbs control the vote and they will not vote for her. She does not represent them and never will. Votes will be split everywhere in this election and which ever candidate wins will not have the majority of the vote. This is were a run off vote for the final 2 candidates should happen.

They need to go through all of her records as a city councillor and see what exactly she voted for and voted against just like the do to Ford to see if she's changing her support on any issues that she's now supporting or against.

Especially if she's running like Ford on a "PROVEN TRACK RECORD". Let's go back and see how proven it is...
Bob Loblaw replying to a comment from Jamie / March 13, 2014 at 10:25 am
So what youre saying Jamie, is that a child should suffer if their parents are struggling to make ends meet? Unfortunately not everyone is problem free with perfect jobs and mentally stable. What if the parent has an addiction and would rather spend the money on drugs than breakfast for their child? You would rather save your tax dollars and let the kid starve because their parent screwed up? This is exactly the conservative bullshit mentality that actually increases the social divide and CREATES homelessness and poverty. By providing equal opportunities for all children, we actually give them a fighting chance to not become the "homeless freeloading filth" that you conservative idiots loathe sharing tax dollars with. Look at the big picture before making small minded assumptions.

Toronto used to be a city of families. The condo boom has changed that by building nothing but one bedroom unit towers. The city has become less affordable for families. When she says she wants to make it better for families it makes sense to me because the city is already great for singles. I think it would be great if it was made better for families as well

Jamie replying to a comment from Bob Loblaw / March 13, 2014 at 10:32 am
If a parent has an addiction or doesn't want too or can't afford too provide the necessities of life, then that's child abuse ant the child should be taken from the home and placed somewhere they can get the necessities of life. A warm breakfast provided to all kids at the school does not fix any of the problems the child is facing at home with their abusive parents.
Bob Loblaw replying to a comment from Jamie / March 13, 2014 at 10:35 am
I hope you realize that people like you actually drive the tax dollars up by being so negligent. Ever heard of the word equilibrium. There is a fine balance of spending and social programming that actually keeps the tax dollars at a sustainable rate. By denying people these things then you end up paying more to police them and feed them in jails, staff courthouses etc. etc. etc. You think that everyone should just work harder and earn their own and if they don't then what? ship them off to the island of misfit toys so you don't have to be inconvenienced by them in your perfect little world? Not everyone has the choice to have a perfect job and life and they work 5 times as hard as you do for next to nothing. Youre a small minded person Jamie. Stop thinking about yourself and consider helping others for 5 minutes and maybe if we all do that, you will actually save some of your precious tax dollars.

Bob Loblaw replying to a comment from Jamie / March 13, 2014 at 10:48 am
You do realize that your tax dollars are paying for child services like that. And there are good parents out there that are NOT addicted to anything and are struggling to make ends meet. You don't actually think any of these things through do you? Like I said before, not everyone has a perfect life and has equal opportunity. People work their asses off just to pay rent and maybe they can afford to provide their kids with the simplest things in life. So you suggest they get taken away from their parents and put them in a foster home. You do realize that this will cost you a lot more of your precious tax dollars than providing kids with breakfast, books, and other simple necessities to give them an equal opportunity right? Think about the percentages of kids that will turn out to be better educated and more successful down the road when provided these necessities. Like our buddy Rofo, you are too busy counting your pennies and being cheap to see the big picture. I don't give a shit about potholes and zoo passes. I care about the fact that our transit system is bursting at the seams, there are people struggling to make rent and we are eliminating and underfunding public housing (that is in unbelievable state of disrepair) and other such issues. Rofo has failed to address any of the big issues because all he ever does is blow his own horn about all the money he saves (mostly lies). If he saved anything it should come as no surprise because he hasn't even done anything! 3 subway stops that hes bragging about which cost us 100 million of you beloved tax dollars just to CANCEL the LRT, and then another 3 billion on the hook which WILL come from taxpayers in part. you know what they are going to do? slam MORE people into an already drastically overrun system. Everything he does is short term and small minded. Honestly this guy is not saving anyone money and he is running this city into the ground slowly. I could go on for hours, but the bottom line is stop pennie pinching, do some research and educate yourself, and vote for chow.
nisi replying to a comment from NuclearFamily / March 13, 2014 at 10:49 am
Yeah, making things better for families still makes things better for singles and hipsters because raising the quality of life for people, all people, benefits everyone. If my neighbours kids aren't starving and if they're educated then I'm better off when those kids become adults. Malnourished kids are a strain on health care and uneducated people are a strain on our economy. Taking care of people, whether it's the people in your family or your community or your city is the right thing to do, but there's also a pay off beyond that.

As for "wind out of her mouth" - that's all campaigns are... like absolutely all of them. What actual accomplishments do the other candidates have? Until they're elected we won't know what they can get done. There's only one candidate who should be able to provide proof, but he hasn't managed to do much of note.

Thank you for putting a g in famiglia, caro.
Grim / March 13, 2014 at 11:04 am

Chow’s annual MP pension will be $38,745, or $1.8 million to age 90, said Greg Thomas, national director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Adding in what she receives from Jack Layton’s pension — $26,457 annually — brings the total annual pension is $65,202 or $3 million by the time she reaches 90 years old.

Good to see her standing up for us - Let the Ford family and FecesNation know they are all unacceptable to our city and our families. I love Chow already.

“The current mayor's disappointing leadership has let us down over and over again. He has failed to make the critical investments our city needs to stay competitive … the current mayor is failing at his job and he is no role model for our children"
G / March 13, 2014 at 12:43 pm
This "looking out for number one" attitude that many of you have is ridiculous and demonstrates a lack of understanding of how a successful society operates. Just because Chow is for families doesn't mean she is against singles. Children are our collective future, regardless of whether they came directly from my loins. And why do tax cuts (or no increases) trump every other concern? As a middle-aged, unmarried, childless-by-choice, high wage earner, I believe it is my role in our society to pay taxes so that people less advantaged than I can receive the support they need. I benefit because it makes my city a safer, smarter, more productive and enjoyable place to live. If you don't like it, move to the US.

Our parents' generation never had to pay $800,000 just to live in a fucking house. Nor did they have wage levels that had been stagnant for 35 years.
Simon replying to a comment from Simon / March 14, 2014 at 01:16 pm
Stop using my name. Your beliefs that Mississauga and Oakville residents are allowed to vote in Toronto's municipal elections and that the Greater Toronto Area exists as a formal political entity demonstrate your lack of knowledge. Sit down, shut up and educate yourself about this city and its institutions instead of sitting around a Starbucks jacking off to your own Instagram page like most of these johnny-come-lately trust fund kids who never even set foot in Toronto before amalgamation and who think it begins and ends at Ossington. It's become impossible to exhibit some genuine pride in our city and help it grow in the face of such myopia. You might want to make a buck and be seen, and Ford Nation might want to zoom around and pretend it's 1955, but caught in the middle of it are those of us who are call this place home. Don't we deserve a say in all this too?
chow_idiot replying to a comment from Simon / March 14, 2014 at 01:42 pm
Exactly HOW DOES OLIVIA CHOW no what its like for the rest of us when she's never had to pay $800,000 just to live in a fucking house. Nor did she have wage levels that had been stagnant for 35 years!!!!!

Cry me a river. Is it our fault you are too unsuccessful to prosper in the 21 Century??? Get a JOB loser.

GOD I can't wait until someone with a brain gets into office like Chow, will sweep all this nonsense under the rug.
chow_idiot replying to a comment from Ha're POOR! / March 14, 2014 at 05:11 pm
WRONG Chow will save us with YOUR Tax dollars. I'm telling all my family members from across Canada to come move to Toronto. CHow will be spending to save us! With housing, food, services. Our family will thrive under her reign!!!
chow_idiot replying to a comment from chow_idiot / March 14, 2014 at 05:35 pm
Yes I'm poor and I've got poor family members with their own families across Canada. Once Chow gets in they're all moving to Toronto.
Rob Ford / March 14, 2014 at 07:16 pm
Now, Doug and me, we know a lot of prostitutes, and Olivia is not selling, so drop it. We also know drug dealers, gangs, drunks, criminals, panderers, corrupt public officials, incompetent politicians, grotesque addicts...and that's just the Ford family! We're bad and WE ARE PROUD! WE ARE SONS OF ANARCHY!
Carl / March 14, 2014 at 07:19 pm
I don't understand what her message and proven track record is for impoverished neighborhoods...What's her recored marry rich successful whitey?
Mark replying to a comment from Toby / March 14, 2014 at 10:54 pm
Actually, she did. She lived in an apartment that was subsidized by the taxpayers. Her 'market' rent was well below what other similar buildings were and was kept artificially low thanks to public subsidy for the co-op. Why else would Mr. Velvet Touch and Ms Chow voluntarily pay extra after being caught? She was and still is a pig that preys on the taxpaying public.
Vern / March 15, 2014 at 08:46 am
You had me at Velvet Touch!
Vern / March 15, 2014 at 08:56 am
If only Chow had more to say about her platform we might have some policies to debate instead of her trash. But she's given us nothing so were talking trash, I guess that's the way she wants it. Herself and her staff control the campaign and the messages she delvers to us. So far nothing.
Understandin Rob 'n Doug / March 15, 2014 at 10:00 am
Born with silver spoons in their mouths, the lack of oxygen deprived them and their siblings of the ability to think. As life-sized puppets of organized crime they became corrupt, aggressive liars who fooled some of the people all of the time to get elected, just like the head of the 5 families did in New York, once upon a time. Time's up. Jail awaits. Bye bye, Ford Nation losers!
Understandin Rob 'n Doug / March 15, 2014 at 10:01 am
Or should I say, "Ciao, losers!".
Josh / March 15, 2014 at 10:25 am
Why you talking Ford in an Olivia Chow article? Are you obsessed with him? You just can't seem to stop. yourself.... go take your anger over mommy and daddy issues elsewhere...Ciao Bella! R should I say Ciao IDIOT
FamilyBusinessOnTheTaxpayer / March 15, 2014 at 10:36 am
No more stupid political families! Fords, Bush, Chow/Layton brigade get out!!! You mayve had one qualified political figure in your family but that doesn't mean the rest of the family idiots get in, and can make your families income and retirement off the taxpayer. You want a guaranteed wage and to help out the country, Mike Layton join the army and Olivia resign now!!
This Family Business is GREAT for the Taxpayer! replying to a comment from FamilyBusinessOnTheTaxpayer / March 15, 2014 at 11:13 am
The only problem with your argument, FamilyBusiness, is that Olivia Chow is actually very qualified to do the job and is the best candidate in the field. It's because she has RESPECT FOR THE TAXPAYERS.

As well, when she was councillor she helped to balance the budget, she reduced taxes and helped get rid of the gravy train that conservative-minded Mayor Mel Lastman had created.

So, like it or not, this is one dynasty that will continue. Then Mike Layton will run in a decade and he'll continue the excellent work Jack started.

Sorry, bub. At least the city will start functioning normally again, so that should be a silver lining, right?
Carl - no longer a boy, but not yet a man replying to a comment from Carl / March 15, 2014 at 11:35 am
See Carl, you aren't old enough to recall, but that woman was the glue that held Council together...reaching across party lines to get compromises made that benefitted all. It's called HARD WORK, and you can Google that term if it doesn't mean anything to you.

She got her stripes the old fashioned way--she EARNED 'em!

Sounds like Cho is just the person you need in office, to see REAL leadership for a change, set an example you can follow. Not just a fat dude who lets idiots take drunken selfies with him at raves.

By the way...what the hell is Ford doing attending RAVES anymore, anyway...the 90s called, they want their E back, Robbie.

Olivia Chow smoked pot as school-board trustee! RESIGN WOMAN RESIGN!!!
Poor Vern replying to a comment from Vern / March 15, 2014 at 11:42 am
Somebody PLEASE explain politics/the political process to him. It's SO embarrassing to watch him flail around on this blog, like some kind of dumb, runt puppy who has fallen into a latrine and is too addled to figure how to drag himself to safety.

Oh, Vernie-boy, you silly numbskull.
DEAN (has small PEEN) replying to a comment from DEAN / March 15, 2014 at 11:45 am
Olivia Chow smoked pot? So what? So has Harper, Trudeau, Wynne, Hudak, Ford and Kelly. EVERYONE smokes pot, dumbass.

But NO ONE smokes crack unless you dropped out of highschool or no job or zero life or any hop in hell of being anything other than a dirbag loser.
DEAN replying to a comment from DEAN (has small PEEN) / March 15, 2014 at 01:02 pm
SO WHAT? SO WHAT? Alot of the older generation, and voters that aren't close to any drug culture at all see marijuana and crack as the same. To alot of people if someone is doing drugs they are doing drugs, doesn't matter if its Marijuana, Crack or Heroin. Alot of senior voters remember marijuana as a bad evil drug from the past and its still bad, and they don't really know what crack is other than a drug.

Say no to Drug campaigns for our children don't rank the drugs as what's more accepted than others. Its say no to all drugs!! She has just levelled the playing field between her and Ford and can no longer take the high road of being a good role model.

How can a school board trustee want to keep drugs out of our schools but then go home at night to smoke marijuana? Your holding a position of trust with taxpayers and then disrespecting the position of trust. Do as I say not as I do?

Olivia Chow smoked pot while she was school-board trustee! R

...somebody slide this cracker him some quality smoke.

(just don't slobber on it, Deany-child--he only thing worse than bogarting is getting the canoe wet)
Dean has obviously never gotten high, and especially not with his kids replying to a comment from DEAN / March 15, 2014 at 01:46 pm
I know at first blush it may sound heretical, but smoking marijuana with my kid (now kids) was one of the nicest things I've ever done. You're missing out on a great bonding moment, Dean.

A unique experience, not unlike a great fishing trip or a great bonfire at the cottage...very relaxing. I actually ended up doing so by accident with my daughter before my husband did it with our son, which was a little funny.

My advice, though? Just don't do it before they are in their later 20s, otherwise it's kind of a waste. They're a bit too juvenile before that to really make the most of this kind of quality time together.
DEAN replying to a comment from Dean needs to CHILL... / March 15, 2014 at 01:59 pm
CHOW NATION backs her, makes excuses for her behaviour, says everybody else does it so its ok, your sounding like blind unquestioning FORD NATION supporters.
DEAN / March 15, 2014 at 02:23 pm
WOW - CHOW NATION is sounding like the blind supporters of FORD NATION.

Making up excuses for her behavior, everybody else is doing it so its ok. Its not as a bad as what so and so is doing....let's not be hypocrites.
Perry Como / March 18, 2014 at 03:25 pm
Chow has been living off tax payer money her whole life. What a concept
realityCheck / March 19, 2014 at 12:58 pm
While I generally tend to vote NDP, Chow is not a candidate that I can support. Why? Because throughout her career she has demonstrated lack of financial sense and sustainability of public benefit programs. A recent example is her campaign to extend seniors benefits to elderly immigrants who recently immigrated and therefore paid little or nothing into such benefit schemes. Ford is a bad mayor...but I don't see Chow as the answer.
you've NEVER, EVER voted NDP replying to a comment from realityCheck / March 20, 2014 at 09:05 am
you Ford a rock of crack, poof, be gone!
realityCheck / March 20, 2014 at 01:53 pm
@you'veNEVER,EVER voted NDP...Yes, I have and do vote NDP. What I've never ever done is vote Conservative. I will also say outright that I tend to be more old-school NDP and am one of those people who think the party that used to support working people and truly represent a progressive alternative has morphed into something that is vaguely soft-edged neoliberal (a la Blair). Chow's late husband Layton had many admirable qualities but under him the party seemed to complete its shift from focusing on labour to representing the urban whining classes (you know, the politically-correct bourgeoisie who like to see themselves are progressive, but really aren't). Maybe you should refrain from commenting on things that you know nothing about...such as how I vote, as well as on municipal issues.
Ward34 / March 28, 2014 at 12:30 pm
I just heard Chow quack this morning, presenting her "platform", that if Mayor Ford would spend less time in Hollywood (where he was during a weekend in his own time on his own dime), and spend more time talking to (her idol, the unelected Corruptocrat) Wynne (who refuses to discuss ANYthing with Ford), the already low property taxes for small businesses in DOWNTOWN TORONTO, would even be lower...blah...blah...blah.
This prating crackpot shouldn't even be a match for Ford during the campaign.
