Ford Nation YouTube series spawns rebuttal videos

Posted by Derek Flack / February 11, 2014

Ford Nation RebuttalHot on the heels of the launch of the new Ford brothers YouTube series, counter videos have popped up on the site with the goal of drawing into question claims made in the original clips. The gist is pretty simple. "This independent channel will review the content posted by Ford Nation and provide rebuttals where necessary, applicable and appropriate," reads a note of explanation on the Ford Nation rebuttal page. "Viewers are encouraged to review original source material and come to their own conclusions."

Pretty much every politician out there could be caught contradicting him or herself at one point or another, but the flip-flopping documented here is grin-worthy for how bald-faced it is. The creators of the channel encourage viewers to watch the original videos prior to the rebuttals, but I'm not sure that you really need to. Oh, and these clips are unsurprisingly far more entertaining than what's coming out of the Ford camp. Some free advice for Rob and Doug: get yourselves on the same page, guys.

Solid Gold. Even better than the articles that tear the show apart.

Pathetic that rebuttal videos are being created and your all focusing on the 'loser'. Focusing on the loser is never a winning stategy BUT I guess thats all you can do when no ones stepped up to represent you on the ballot.

There was a man that was so focused on the appearance of his neighbors yard/lawn that he spent so much time peering over the fence that his own lawn (strategy) went down hill and died.
Vinnie replying to a comment from Tom / February 11, 2014 at 02:34 pm
meanwhile, you're focusing on the people who are (allegedly) focusing on the losers. One step further into the (alleged) loser scale. Nice strategy there, "Tom". You must be a highly accomplished politicial strategist.

There was once a man so desperate for a metaphor that he just typed a bunch of gibberish and hoped that he had proven a point!
anthony replying to a comment from Alex / February 11, 2014 at 02:45 pm
Give it another couple weeks and the last hold outs will just be left with "Oh Yeah? What you gonna do about it?". Um, wait a minute, they are already there.
Dave / February 11, 2014 at 02:49 pm
The problem is, no one who is a Ford supporter will even bother with these videos, and if they're ever presented with them, will simply fall back on the tried and true Ford method of response:

1) Deny, deny, deny
2) Focus on Rob's "record"
3) Change the subject, attack those asking the questions personally
4) Claim that Ford is a common guy, and not wealthy
5) Simply state that what he did is in the past, yet continues to be a problem in the present
6) Blame the "downtown elite", as if such a class actually exists and takes themselves seriously

I hate every minority group. Some may vote for me, so I keep my mouth shut, but no gay is going to vote for me & my dumbkopf voters hate gays, so...hey, It's always good to have a scapegoat.
Tom replying to a comment from Alex / February 11, 2014 at 03:09 pm
I support Rob and these videos are created for Ford Nation so he can speak to us directly. Powerful move by a powerful man. Reminds me of how Obama used social media to drive his campaign to ultimately win the election.

Rebuttals make the Fords (and populists in general) stronger.

The only way to beat them is to change the conversation.

Dan Forth / February 11, 2014 at 03:23 pm
There was an interesting editorial (I think in The Globe) that argued Ford supporters are more interested in assuring "the left" DON'T win the next election, than actually supporting Ford's platform itself. In other words, it's more about making sure the "other side" (i.e. "downtown types") doesn't win, more than supporting Ford.

This perspective appears to be partly true, as Ford supporters (generally) are unable to explain any actual good he has done for the city. Ford supporters love how "Ford is a straight shooter", despite countless evidence of him being caught in lies, etc.

As mentioned above, it's sad that come next election I know who I'm NOT voting for, but who gets my vote is still unclear.
Ken Sington replying to a comment from Dan Forth / February 11, 2014 at 03:33 pm
In a way, this has become an endemic trait in all politics. IKt's no longer voting for who has the best ideas, or who is the best qualified - it's voting against the "lesser of however many evils" and against who you don't want in office.

This has a lot to do with people being jerks, and a real lack of inspiring candidates.
Flib replying to a comment from E. Toby Coke / February 11, 2014 at 03:36 pm
Think you are bang on here. We just have to stop listening. And there are so many better conversation we could be having.
Tom replying to a comment from E. Toby Coke / February 11, 2014 at 04:03 pm
I agree, my point exactly. Let me and the rest of Ford Nation celebrate Robs greatness.

Go find your own hero, if you can find one! Stintz are you there?

Doug & Rob should arm pit fart the tune, "Whistle While You Work" as a duet.
iSkyscraper / February 11, 2014 at 04:55 pm
Torontoist does a fantastic recap as well, but these videos are well done and much appreciated. If nothing else they will be handy for opponents come election time so that anytime Rob tries something he can be immediately shot down. Kudos to their creator.

stopitman replying to a comment from Tom / February 11, 2014 at 05:46 pm
He hasn't been "powerful" since his first election and since he dropped the ball on his money black hole Eglinton subway.

He could win elections for the next 30 years, yet still not get anything done because he only has one vote and is bad at working with other people.

Besides all of that, the fact that he wins an election doesn't make him (1) right, (2) smart in terms of anything but in the use of populism, (3) productive, or (4) a good mayor. A cat and a dead person can and have won elections, doesn't mean they're good or smart, but could just prove the point that the voters are idiots and/or all or some of the candidates are idiots.

My pig eyes are too small to study must be gay.

Keep focusing on Rob y'all.

Remember there was a man that was so focused on the appearance of his neighbors yard/lawn that he spent so much time peering over the fence that his own lawn (strategy) went down hill and died.
Hazel McCallion / February 12, 2014 at 08:41 am
Y'all? Lawn...fence...focusing? Yer nuts, y'all! Everybody watches a trainwreck, y'all! Besides, by next October Rob won't be able to stand and will be in jail. He will be ecstatic since it's so easy to score Oxy in jail...and no cell phone cameras. And he can be alone with Sandro!
Tom / February 12, 2014 at 09:06 am
He shoulda paved it with interlock so he wouldn't have to worry about it.

hey man! / February 12, 2014 at 08:58 pm
almost sounds like the burbs voted in ford to get even with the downtown elites for being, well, elitests. which is kinda ironic since fords belong to a demographic elite. fords know this all to well. rebuttal ads are NOT going to work: anti-elite dont have the patience nor time to sift through videos, theyre too busy checking out poangs on ikea or beibers package. maybe theirs hope in chow, stinz, tory or soknacki. if they havent already met clandestine-like, toronto will hopefully have a shining light by summer-start.
