Lazy Barista

Lazy Barista has only been open for a couple of months, but it's already becoming a regular go-to spot for people who need a quick cup of coffee.

That's because its owners and couple Zain Tapal and Maheen Hasan realized there was a bit of a void in cafes in the area, particularly on the southeast side where their business is currently located.

"The residents around here really needed a good cup of coffee," Tapal says.

Lazy BaristaPrior to opening Lazy Barista, Tapal says he and his wife, who are residents in the up and coming area and avid coffee drinkers, couldn't find coffee within a walkable distance. Instead they would travel to Dineen Coffee on Yonge and Richmond for a pick-me-up.

Fortunately they don't have to travel as far anymore, now that their business has opened in the Waterfront Innovation Centre building. The space itself is bright and airy, thanks to natural light and minimal design.

With its location comes a lot of regulars, Tapal says, with a lot of them being office workers around the area. You'll often hear the cafe's baristas calling the customers by their first names.

lazy baristaThis is Tapal and Hasan's first time running a cafe together. According to Tapal, who used to work in finance and later owned and ran a Miniso at Dufferin Mall, the process to open and run Lazy Barista was two years in the making.

Taking coffee courses, doing coffee tastings in Bali, finding the right vendors and hiring a team were just some of the many things they had to do before launching, he says.Lazy BaristaBesides filling that void of cafes in the area, the owners' goal is to be consistently top quality in both the coffee and service they provide.

"We're not trying to reinvent the wheel," Tapal says. "I just wanted to do something right."

Currently Lazy Barista uses De Mello Coffee Roasters for its coffee-based drinks. While a lot of cafes are known to use De Mello Coffee Roasters as a vendor, Tapal says its the technique that their store uses to make sure their coffee is consistently good.

Lazy BaristaEven if their cafe door is open for a little while, the team would have to readjust their equipment settings, due to the humidity affecting the taste of the coffee they provide, he says.

Besides the coffee classics, like a drip coffee ($3.00), Americano ($3.75) and cappuccino ($4.35), you can also get the cafe's specialty drinks. The Lazy B Special ($5.65), for instance, is a take on the café con leche that's typically made with condensed milk.

Lazy BaristaThere's also the Honey Cardamom Latte ($5.65), a drink that's on the sweeter side and made with the aforementioned ingredients.

Tea-based drinks are available too, like the matcha latte ($5.25), the Londong Fog ($4.75) and steeped teas from Pluck ($3.00 each).

Lazy BaristaAs for food, Lazy Barista uses wholesale bakery Circles and Squares. You can get savoury eats like a Havarti scone($4.00), spinach and feta croissants ($4.50 each) and breakfast sandwiches ($6.75 each).Lazy BaristaA lot of sweet options are also available, like the apple crumble muffin ($3.95), almond croissant ($4.50), and various cookies ($3.50 each).
