niagara falls winter

Ontario's Niagara Falls is totally encased in ice and it's such a vibe

Niagara Falls has been transformed into a winter wonderland, and the popular Ontario tourist destination looks like a scene pulled straight from a fantasy movie as a shell of ice encases trees, railings, and other surfaces surrounding the falls.

The combination of cold weather, rain, and the ever-present mist cloud emanating from the thundering waterfall has resulted in some impressive ice accretion, giving Niagara Falls an otherworldly feel in recent days.

A video captured by photographer Christopher Mathew and reshared by Niagara Parks highlights the impressive shell of ice encasing just about everything on the busy tourist stretch overlooking the Horseshoe Falls.

Other users have shared their own views of the winter wonderland, which highlight iced-over railings and cliff faces covered in icicles.

Even amid frigid January temperatures, Niagara Falls has remained a hot tourist draw as many flock to take advantage of the surreal photo ops that await.

However, not all good things last.

An unseasonably warm temperature spike this week will likely melt away much of the ice. Niagara Falls is expected to hit a daytime high of 11 C on Friday, and ice-encased surfaces may not last through the mid-winter heat spike, though temperatures will plummet again the following week, priming the tourist destination for another round of winter wonderland views.
