Tolls at major Canada-U.S. crossing set to increase in 2026

Drivers crossing between Ontario and Michigan will soon have to pay more to use the Ambassador Bridge, with new toll increases set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

The 96-year-old bridge, which is one of the busiest international border crossings in North America, posted updated toll rates on its website outlining the upcoming increases for passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, and oversized loads.

The toll rate for automobiles, buses, and motorcycles will increase by US$1 from US$9 to US$10 (or CAD$14). For vehicles with trailers, the rate will increase from US$18 to US$20 (or $28CAD).

Commercial vehicles will also see their rates increase from US$14 to US$15 per axle with an A-Pass or E-ZPass, or US$20 per axle without an account. The bridge's escort service for wide and oversized loads between nine feet and 13.6 feet will also increase from US$125 to US$135.

The hiked-up tolls come just a few weeks before the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is expected to happen sometime in early 2026 after years of construction.

The two bridges, which are located roughly three miles from each other, are both located on the Windsor-Detroit border, which welcomes more than 40,000 commuters, truck drivers, and tourists carrying over $320 million worth of goods every day.
