World's largest passenger plane forced back to Toronto after mid-flight emergency

A routine transatlantic flight turned into an unexpected round trip last week, when Etihad Airways' Airbus A380 (known as the world's largest passenger aircraft) was forced to return to Toronto Pearson Airport after a mid-flight emergency.

The aircraft, operating EY22 from Toronto to Abu Dhabi, had been in the air for over three hours when it reversed course just off the coast of Newfoundland. The A380 had departed Pearson Airport at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, July 14, and landed back in Toronto at 9:24 p.m., cutting short what is typically a 12-hour journey to the UAE.

The emergency, which reportedly involved a "person in crisis," required the crew to seek the closest suitable diversion. However, not every airport can accommodate an aircraft the size of an A380, especially one fully loaded with passengers, cargo, and fuel.

Flight radar data shows the superjumbo reaching a cruising altitude of nearly 33,000 feet before turning back. Prior to landing, the aircraft spent approximately 30 minutes circling near Toronto to dump fuel. After landing, the aircraft remained on the tarmac for 30 minutes before reaching the gate.

On June 24, Etihad officially launched its daily A380 route from Abu Dhabi to Toronto, marking the first time the airline has brought its double-decker to the city. It also makes Toronto one of the few cities globally to host two A380 operators (the other being Emirates).

Etihad's A380 is one of the world's most luxurious passenger aircraft, featuring 486 seats across four cabin classes. It includes The Residence, a three-room suite complete with a private living room, bedroom, and ensuite shower. The aircraft also offers nine "First Apartments," 70 Business Studios, and 405 Economy Smart Seats with enhanced legroom.

In comparison to the previous model serving the route, the aircraft brings a 31 per cent increase in capacity. The airline's flights depart Abu Dhabi daily at 2:40 a.m. and arrive in Toronto at 9 a.m., with return flights leaving Toronto at 1:40 p.m. and landing back at Zayed International Airport at 11 a.m. the next day.
