Tech company hiring for dozens of jobs in Toronto but it's harder to get into than Harvard

Tech jobs are some of the most sought-after roles in Toronto, which is regularly recognized as a hot spot for the industry, serving as home to the offices of some of the biggest names in the game.

Even on the brink of recession, some sources still consider T.O. one of the top hubs in the world for job growth in 2025, with a high demand for tech talent specifically.

But, with the present economy being what it is and unemployment in the city at a worrying (and rising) high, competition is fierce — especially at one company in particular.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, founded in San Francisco more than a decade ago, presently touts itself as Canada's leading employer in the crypto sector. Though it already has a team of more than 300 staff here — after only starting to hire in the Great White North in 2021 — it is presently looking to fill some 90 new positions nationally.

However, the company is transparent in stating that its jobs are harder to secure than admission to the esteemed Harvard University.

"It's 36x harder to get hired at Coinbase than to get into Harvard," the firm recently revealed in a release about its AI-powered hiring strategy, which uses the tech to vet resumes, conduct phone screenings, schedule interviews and more.

Execs added that in 2024, only 0.1 per cent of 1.7 million applicants made it through their expertly-engineered funnel, allowing human recruiters to spend their time focusing on the best of the best candidates as AI shuffled through the others.

And, this makes sense, given that the brand has a staggering 499 job openings currently listed on its website. Of these, 92 are located in Canada, with the opportunity to work out of Toronto or anywhere else in the country, seeing as Coinbase is remote-first.

If you think you've got what it takes, the firm is seeking Canadian candidates for positions such as Senior Analytics Engineer, Data Scientist, Product Designer, Backend and Frontend Software Engineers, Engineering Managers, Blockchain Security Engineers and more.

But, in a time when even any old job seems difficult to secure, getting hired by Coinbase may be an especially impossible feat.
