Toronto Blue Jays officially eliminated from playoff contention

It's over. 

One year after being two outs away from winning the World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays have failed to even make the postseason in 2026. This marks the third time in seven seasons that they've missed the playoffs. 

Toronto's fate was sealed Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, losing 4-2 to the Orioles. It puts the Blue Jays 4.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final wild card spot in the American League, with only four games left in the season. 

The Blue Jays have won just 77 times this season, one year after posting an AL-high 94 victories.

What went wrong this season will surely get dissected this winter. Injuries didn't help matters, as they plagued the team right from the get-go.

No player is shouldering more blame than Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was so good for the Blue Jays last postseason but saw his play crater in 2026. Guerrero has just nine home runs (down from 23) and an OPS of .695 (down from .848). Vladdy wasn't alone in his struggles this season, as veterans like George Springer and Max Scherzer also failed to repeat what they did last year. 

It'll be interesting to see what changes are made in the offseason, and both Springer and Scherzer could be lost in free agency.

The Blue Jays play the second half of a doubleheader Wednesday night in Baltimore, before returning to Rogers Centre for a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds this weekend to close the season.
