Toronto Blue Jays lose Jesús Sánchez to another team

Jesús Sánchez's time with the Toronto Blue Jays organization came to an official end on Monday afternoon.

Just ahead of the weekend, the Blue Jays announced that Sánchez had been designated for assignment. The 28-year-old struggled immensely this season, particularly on the defensive side. His three errors led all left fielders in the MLB prior to Friday's designation.

Despite Sánchez's struggles in 2026, however, he does have some upside, enough so that the Arizona Diamondbacks have taken a shot on him, scooping him up off waivers.

The move will result in Sánchez continuing to help his team push for a wild-card spot, as the Diamondbacks currently sit 2.5 games back of the San Diego Padres for the final playoff position in the National League. 

With this officially being the end, it's more than fair to say that Sánchez's tenure with the Blue Jays didn't pan out as hoped. 

The Blue Jays acquired Sánchez months ahead of the 2026 season in a trade with the Houston Astros that saw Joey Loperfido go the other way. The deal was made to help give the Jays some more offensive support.

To Sánchez's credit, he was fine offensively during his time in Toronto, hitting .260 with eight home runs and 35 RBI through 99 games. Unfortunately, his defensive blunders far outweighed the success he had in the batter's box. 

As for the Jays, they remain in a tightly contested battle for a wild-card position, entering Monday one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the final spot. They will begin a three-game series versus the 70-79 Detroit Tigers on Monday night.
