Toronto Blue Jays Cease

Toronto Blue Jays are in a two-team battle for final playoff spot

The Toronto Blue Jays are living day-by-day when it comes to their playoff chances.

Toronto is sporting a 72-72 record with just 18 games left on their schedule and is just a single game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the final AL wildcard spot.

It's become a dogfight for that final spot, but the Blue Jays are still very much alive and have a good chance at making it to the postseason for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

As Toronto embarks on a three-game series against the Athletics on Monday night, FanGraphs is giving the Blue Jays a 38.2 per cent chance at clinching the final AL wildcard spot.

That is the only remaining path to the postseason for the Blue Jays.

According to FanGraphs, the battle for that final AL wildcard spot has essentially become a two-team race between the Blue Jays and Guardians, and Toronto holds the slight edge at the moment.

Cleveland, however, still has a shot at a division title as they have a 29.1 per cent chance of winning the AL Central, while their wildcard odds are slightly behind the Jays at 27.9 per cent.

Things drop off significantly from there, as the Texas Rangers have just a 7.9 per cent chance at snagging the final wildcard spot. From then on, the Minnesota Twins are being given a three per cent chance and the Baltimore Orioles a measly 2.9 per cent. Every other team competing for the spot are under a percentage point.

Toronto will need to continue the strong play all the way through the final weeks of the season. Their odds may have taken a slight hit with Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Royals, but the Blue Jays have more than a fighter's chance as they head into the final stretch.
