Toronto Raptors disrespected again with star player called NBA's 'most overrated'

Fresh off a 38-point performance against the Miami Heat that moved the Toronto Raptors within one win of securing their first playoff berth in four years, Brandon Ingram still isn't getting the respect he deserves.

On Friday, Ingram was named the league's most overrated player by basketball-focused media outlet Bleacher Report.

Ingram is putting together one of the best offensive seasons of his career in Toronto, setting a Raptors franchise record for most points by a player in their first season with the team (1,614 points), surpassing marks previously set by Mike James and Kawhi Leonard.

The 28-year-old has recorded career highs in minutes played, points, and field goals made, while leading all Raptors players in total points scored. Still, the publication handed him the dubious honour.

"A handful of the league's biggest (or at least bigger) names have not performed up to the level of their reputations. We're going to shine a spotlight on them," the outlet wrote.

The publication argued that Ingram's production and reputation are inflated, suggesting Toronto's success has more to do with teammates Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley, and Sandro Mamukelashvili than Ingram himself.

It also pointed out that Ingram ranks behind five Raptors teammates in combined plus/minus and value over replacement, metrics the reflects a player's overall impact, which it argues is concerning given his role as the team's leading scorer.

A counterpoint to Bleacher Report's argument is that only two of the five Raptors players ranking ahead of Ingram, Barnes and Mamukelashvili, have played as many games as him.

For example, Ingram has played 20+ more games compared to RJ Barrett and Jakob Poeltl, meaning their totals could be skewed/inflated due to smaller sample sizes.

Last season, an Ingram-less Raptors finished 30-52. The addition of Ingram, along with drafting NBA-ready big man Collin Murray-Boyles and signing Mamukelashvili in free agency, has added 15 more wins and has helped transform Toronto from a lottery-ball team into a frisky playoff contender.
