The Toronto Blue Jays are demoting Jeff Hoffman from his closer role — for now.
General manager Ross Atkins met with the media on Friday before the Blue Jays open a three-game homestand against the Cleveland Guardians and announced that the team's closer role will be handled by committee.

They’ll go with a closer by committee for now while Hoffman works on things in lower-leverage spots.
Atkins pointed to the continued effectiveness of Hoffman's stuff but said the pitching staff will work to better understand the gap between his performance and results in lower-leverage situations.
"It's not necessarily that he needs it, but we feel it's best for us and him at this point," said Atkins.
He went on to say Hoffman will still be a vital part of the Blue Jays bullpen, as management and the front office still believe he is "a weapon" for the team.
For the time being, the Blue Jays do not intend to go with a single closer, Atkins said. Usage will be "something that we work through on a daily basis."
Hoffman has allowed 11 runs in 12 appearances this season and currently leads MLB in blown saves with three.
