Toronto Blue Jays are having a record-breaking start to season

The Toronto Blue Jays have kicked off the 2026 season with a record-breaking performance over the weekend.

Last year's World Series runner-ups picked up right where they left off in their opening three-game series against the Athletics. On top of completing the sweep with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon, the Jays' pitching staff set a new MLB record in the process, recording an incredible 50 strikeouts over three games.

That is the most strikeouts in the first three games of an MLB season, beating out the 2020 Cincinnati Reds, who managed to get 46.

Toronto's starting pitchers accounted for 32 of those 50 strikeouts, with Kevin Gausman notching 11 K's on opening night, Dylan Cease snagging 12 on Saturday, and Eric Lauer adding another nine on Sunday.

As for the remaining 18 strikeouts, those were courtesy of Jeff Hoffman (6), Louie Varland (2), Brendon Little (2), Tommy Nance (2), Tyler Rogers (2), Braydon Fisher (2), Mason Fluharty (1), and Spencer Miles (1).

On top of setting the MLB record, the Blue Jays also set a franchise record for the most strikeouts in a three-game series, at any point in a season. This bested their previous best of 45 set by the 2023 squad against the Seattle Mariners.

It's about as good as you could write it for the Blue Jays' start to the season. This is the first time that Toronto has opened up the season 3-0 in 34 years, with the last time coming during the 1992 season, the same year the Jays won their first World Series title.

The hope is that Toronto can keep this up as the Colorado Rockies are set to come into town on Monday to kick off a three-game series.
