The vibes were almost perfect at Rogers Centre on Friday night.
An opening montage of last season's journey brought memories rushing back from one of the greatest runs in franchise history. Vladdy Guerrero Jr. and George Springer showed their love and appreciation to the fans before the first pitch.
The Blue Jays picked up their first win of the season, despite giving up a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, which was enough to induce a little Toronto trauma after last year's season finale.
For the most part, Jays fans had lots to celebrate as the 2026 season got underway.
But there were a few things that some fans don't seem to be celebrating.
The team unveiled revised banners on Friday night to celebrate the team's accomplishments. Among them, a banner raised to celebrate the 2025 season reads "ALCS Champs," which is a little redundant. However, it is in line with the other previous ALDS banners in Rogers Centre.
But as Toronto unveiled its ALCS banner pre-game, another controversial flag drew the ire of some Jays fans.
The new commemoration of the ALCS win was placed right beside a revamped Wild Card banner, which recognizes all four times the Jays reached MLB's mini-playoff series.
While the banner is new, its previous version has caused a stir in the past. And some fans were noticing it for the first time.
Toronto won the single-game Wild Card contest against the Baltimore Orioles back in 2016. Since then, the Wild Card round has been full of horrors.
They lost six straight Wild Card games, getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, and Minnesota Twins between 2020 and 2023.
Amongst a row of division titles, ALDS, ALCS, and World Series banners, you couldn't fault fans for thinking the Wild Card banner was a little out of place.
"Division, American League, and World Series Champions are the only banners that should be up," one fan said.
However, not all fans agree.
"Hot take, but I like them as a list," another fan chimed in, referring to the fact that all four Wild Card appearances are on one banner.
"It's nice to reference at a glance without giving them a ton of space."
The Blue Jays aren't alone in their desire to raise a Wild Card banner. Other teams like the Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, and New York Mets have done the same.
However, other franchises like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers choose not to hang a Wild Card banner.
No matter where you fall on the Wild Card banner debate, one fan had the best answer to how the Jays can rectify the controversial choice.
Wouldn‘t it be better to win the World Series this year and remove the wild card banner?
