Jose Berrios isn't very popular amongst Toronto Blue Jays fans right now.
After serving as one of the Jays' best starters since 2021, the wheels fell off for Berrios in 2025. Struggles over the second half of the season wound up seeing him demoted to the bullpen, before suffering an injury late in the year that saw him sidelined to begin the postseason.
Things got more interesting from there, as Berrios was believed to be fully healthy later in the postseason, but was never spotted around his team. On Monday, GM Ross Atkins took a cautious approach when asked if it was the 31-year-old's decision to remain away.
"He was not happy," Atkins said. "He was disappointed that he wasn't in our rotation. He handled it well, but then when it came down to roster selection, he wasn't on it."
Given the caution exercised by Atkins in his answer, Blue Jays fans and several media members alike have read into the situation and criticized Berrios for what they have deemed a selfish act. That includes TSN host Brian Hayes, who blasted the two-time All-Star on OverDrive.
"For me, that's the end of him," Hayes began. "You've got to get rid of this guy. You cannot have a player who's so bent out of shape making that kind of money, team-first guy, allegedly, because you're not playing, didn't make the roster, you just go home?
"His stats down the stretch were terrible. Then he was banged up. They moved him to the bullpen because he couldn't pitch."

After posting ERAs of 3.65 and 3.60 in 2023 and 2024, respectively, Berrios finished the 2025 season with a fairly disappointing 4.17 ERA.
As Hayes alluded to, Berrios' time in Toronto could be nearing its end. The Jays have added to their rotation this offseason, signing two starters in Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce. They also have three other starters on their roster in Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber.
Trade speculation surrounding Berrios has started to ramp up since the Ponce signing, though Atkins himself seemed open to having him return. He's set to command $19 million in 2026, before an opt-out clause at the end of the season.
Given that Berrios has been a very reliable starter throughout his lengthy MLB career, there is a strong chance he's able to bounce back next season. That said, teams that would have been interested in him may show more hesitancy after he seemingly left his team out of frustration over his demotion.
