Toronto Blue Jays star Trey Yesavage gets hero treatment at college homecoming

When Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage took to the mound for the team throughout their 2025 postseason run, he might have been the most popular guy in the country.

The 22-year-old rookie phenom lit up Canada with his legendary performances throughout the playoffs, making five starts and one relief appearance (in Game 7 of the World Series).

This past weekend, though, he was simply a guy having fun in someone's backyard.

Yesavage was the guest of honour at the homecoming weekend of East Carolina, where he played three seasons before being drafted by the Blue Jays in 2024.

His girlfriend, Taylor, shared a photo of the two of them at a pregame tailgate, where they easily could've been confused for any other student couple.

Yesavage did get his moment in the spotlight, though, where he addressed the stadium to a raucous ovation.

"It's great to be back," Yesavage said while on the microphone at midfield. "Let's go, Pirates!"

What's next for Yesavage and the Blue Jays?

Given his historic postseason, it's easy to forget that Yesavage has only played one pro season and made fewer than 10 appearances at the MLB level.

But barring any unforeseen circumstances, he's clearly done enough to pencil himself in to one of Toronto's five starting rotation spots for next season.

Yesavage's true rookie season will be an interesting test: while he's had little trouble adapting to the MLB game, the biggest hurdle will likely be the longevity of trying to navigate the rigours of a 162-game campaign.

In any case, maybe the Jays will give him the nod for their home opener against the Athletics at the Rogers Centre on March 26, 2026.
