wonderland splash works

Canada's Wonderland water park opening delayed due to bad weather

If you were counting down the days to when you could throw on your swimsuit and cannonball into summer, you're going to have to wait a bit longer, as the opening date for one of the GTA's biggest water parks has been pushed back.

On Friday, Canada's Wonderland announced a one-week delay in the opening of its massive water park, Splash Works, due to below-seasonal cold and wet weather.

Originally scheduled to open for the season on Saturday, May 24, the 20-acre aquatic playground, which is known for its quarter-mile lazy river and Canada's largest outdoor wave pool, will now remain closed over the weekend and reopen a week later than planned, on Saturday, May 31.

While disappointing, the amusement park's team added that the rest of the park remains open daily.

The announcement comes amid a chilly spell of weather in Toronto and much of Southern Ontario. Although the region has already witnessed weather well into the high 20s this month, the Victoria Day long weekend was marked by unseasonably dreary and cold weather.

"Keep in mind, average temperatures are comfortably in the low 20s for this time of year for much of Ontario," The Weather Network wrote, noting that the conditions we're currently seeing are "highly anomalous" and haven't been seen for almost 60 years

The weather agency says the region hasn't experienced temperatures staying in the single digits during the second-last week of May since 1967. Unfortunately, the chilly weather is expected to last through the weekend, pushing the start of summerlike weather further and further into the distance.

According to The Weather Network's forecast, Toronto temperatures will hover in the 8 to 12 C range on Friday, 9 to 14 C on Saturday, and 9 to 16 C on Sunday, with a chance of showers throughout the weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has also issued a Special Weather Statement for Toronto on Friday, warning that there will be rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm, with localized flooding possible in low-lying areas.
