Toronto is home to a brand new spa, and it’s bringing its European heritage to the ancient art of thermal bathing.
Lucky for me, I was graciously hosted for a visit, and I’m happy to report that total relaxation was unlocked. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a mindful solo escape, it's a dreamy way to slow down, switch off, and indulge in a little self-care without having to leave the city.
The best part is that every AIRE experience comes with access to its 90-minute thermal circuit, meaning your treatment is just the beginning.
Here is my honest review of AIRE Ancient Baths.
Tucked away and nearly hidden from the chaos of the city at Front St. and Portland St., I found myself whisked into a restored 1912 Edwardian heritage building — a former publishing press now transformed into a top-of-the-line wellness spot.

Immediately upon arrival, the lobby gave a glimpse of what was to come: wood panelling, candlelight, ambient lighting, and an immediate feeling of ease. I’m told that AIRE Ancient Baths is a Spanish brand, and all of its locations are housed in heritage or historic sites.
It's all about stillness and tranquility here, and to truly capture that "sanctuary" vibe, capacity is deliberately limited to ensure an intimate experience.
In the changing room, I was dazzled by the amenities: Dyson hair appliances, L’Occitane and SheaMoisture products, and even an automatic bathing-suit dryer! But more on this separate luxurious experience later.
Outside the changing rooms, it’s a strict no-phone zone, and I happily complied. For once, texts, emails, and notifications are wiped from my brain — and honestly, what a relief.
Now, onto the good stuff! My first experience at AIRE Ancient Baths was a 45-minute massage, which my achy shoulders and back were extremely thankful for.
Walking through the bath area and up to the second level, I couldn’t help but love the vibe of the entire place — there was lots of big clay pots, bespoke stonework, and vintage mirrors. The decor alone deserves recognition, making me feel as if I’d stepped into an ancient Roman bath.
I arrived in the massage room, where a heated massage bed was waiting for me. I was immediately impressed by the luxury, with every detail seemingly thought through and taken care of.
My specialized therapist focused on key points throughout the massage and consistently checked in to make sure the pressure was just right. I was relaxed and in total bliss. Although the massage was only 45 minutes, it seemed to fly by in seconds, and my shoulders felt like butter by the end.
Bonus points here, too: my bathing suit was warmed up for me, so I could put it back on without experiencing that dreaded cold feeling!
Following the extremely thorough massage, I was ready to dive into the ancient baths experience. I was allotted 90 minutes to explore and enjoy eight thermal baths; from 40 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius (or 103 to 50 Fahrenheit) and even a heavily salted bath.
I started off in the warm water pool, the Tepidarium, to get accustomed to the temperature before heading to the salt bath, the Flotarium. The high salinity here enabling you to float effortlessly, all while listening to underwater music.
This area was especially cool, as it features a salt exfoliation station, where a tub of coarse salt is waiting to be scrubbed onto your arms and legs before you rinse off and hop into the float.
But my absolute favourite area was the Palestra, which starts inside the building and flows outside! That's right, I was swimming in a beautiful pool right in the heart of the city, with total privacy.
Next was the Balneum. The Balneum has thousands of jets, two lie down beds, and both standing and seating areas to enjoy the bubbles. There are also three Frigidariums, aka cold baths, ranging from 10 to 14 degrees Celsius (including one in the steam room). I will admit I only lasted thirty seconds in the latter!
This felt like the three most relaxing hours of my life. AIRE explains that the contrasting temperatures have real benefits: heat slowly eases muscle and joint tension, while cold reactivates circulation, tones the skin and leaves you with a reinvigorating feeling. Moving from one bath to another, the contrast builds into a deep sense of relaxation and renewal.
I finished off my bath adventure with a stop at the Vaporium (aromatherapy steam room), before drying off and heading back to the changing rooms.
Feeling fully invigorated, 100 per cent alive and genuinely relaxed, I pampered myself with luxurious shampoos, creams, and lotions to bring my wellness experience to the next level. Then, it was straight back to my work day!
All in all, I would say my AIRE Ancient Baths experience was exceptional. Besides the quality treatments, the staff was extremely kind and diligent, and I walked away in a state of total bliss.
I especially loved the 90-minute time slot for the baths, so that it wasn't completely crowded and I could take my time going through each pool.
From the beauty of the building, the smiles of the staff members, relaxing waters, and my knot-free shoulders, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I found it to be a truly unique space in Toronto, vastly different from traditional wellness or spa options I've tried before.
Take my word for it, AIRE Ancient Baths is absolutely amazing, and you need to see it for yourself!
