Mutabak Karak

Mutabak Karak is your one-stop shop for Middle Eastern-style street food in Toronto.

Named for a type of Yemeni dish made from pan-fried bread, the Scarborough restaurant is the second to bear the name and can be found in a small plaza across from Eglinton Town Centre.

From the outside, Mutabak Karak doesn't look much different from the surrounding buildings. Its only notable feature is a large green and gold sign above a yellow awning.

mutabak karak torontoStep inside, however, and you'll find a bright, welcoming space, decorated in shades of brown, green and white. An electronic menu hangs above a marble counter, while a self-ordering kiosk sits off to the side.mutabak karak torontoOne of the restaurant's most unusual features is a large sink, located across from the front counter. Co-founder Magdi Bazara explains that handwashing holds a special significance in the Middle East, so he wanted to make sure that sinks were easily accessible.

Magdi and his business partners opened their first restaurant in 2023. Located in Mississauga, their initial restaurant attracted visitors from all across Ontario, as well as a few from the United States.mutabak karak torontoMagdi attributes the restaurant's success to its authentic recipes and presentation. Though Toronto is home to many delicious Middle Eastern restaurants, Magdi asserts that Mutabak Karak offers the largest and most varied selection of mutabak.mutabak karak torontoThe most popular among them is the minced beef mutabak ($14.99), which comes in a large, square box, similar to a pizza.

Inside the box, you'll find a flaky, crepe-like dish, filled with sauteed beef, eggs, onions, tomato, parsley and coriander.mutabak karak torontoThe Dubai chocolate mutabak ($17.99) trades these savoury fillings for crunchy toasted kunafa and pistachio cream. Dark chocolate is drizzled on top, adding an earthy sweetness to the rich, nutty dish.

Both types of mutabak are large enough to feed multiple people, making them ideal for sharing with friends.mutabak karak torontoOf course, if you're looking for something smaller, there are still plenty of options to choose from.

Chapati with Puck cheese ($7.99) is a simple snack, consisting of an unleavened flatbread slathered with cheese spread and folded into a wrap.

Though not as eye-catching as the Dubai chocolate mutabak or as filling as the minced beef mutabak, this dish's greatest strength is its simplicity: not only is it easy to eat on the go, it can also be paired with a variety of drinks and sides.

mutabak karak torontoChicken chili chapati ($13.99) is a more elaborate take on the same concept, made with breaded chicken, chipotle and jalapeno peppers, hot sauce and cheese spread.mutabak karak torontoAdani fries ($5.99) are topped with two types of sauce: bright green chutney sauce, made with coriander, green chillies, mayo and vinegar, and deep red adani sauce, made with Adani chillies, tamarind and hot sauce.

These two sauces work in tandem, creating a dish that is equal parts tangy, spicy and sweet.mutabak karak torontoSambosas are bite-sized pastries filled with your choice of mashed potatoes ($1.25) or minced beef ($1.50). Both types are seasoned with a fragrant spice blend, which kept me coming back for more.mutabak karak torontoMutabak Karak also serves a wide selection of Middle Eastern snacks, including spicy Oman Chips and flavoured Almarai Milk.mutabak karak torontoMy personal favourite was Karkade, a refreshing drink made from raspberry juice and hibiscus flowers. Be sure to snag one before heading out!mutabak karak torontoMutabak Karak is located at 69 Lebovic Avenue.
