Cheffy's
Cheffy's is a casual Indian restaurant in Toronto that specializes in spicy street food.
Founded in 2022, the restaurant's concept was born of a combination of necessity and passion.
Nishant Sharma, one of the restaurant's founders, tells us that he wanted to bring the culinary traditions of his hometown, Delhi, to Toronto. As such, Cheffy's menu showcases a wide selection of Indian staples.
Other aspects of Indian culture can be seen in the restaurant's decor. Hand-painted murals, featuring elephants, peacocks and rickshaws, cover the concrete walls, while lanterns hang from the ceiling.
A wall of artificial greenery separates the dining room from the kitchen, giving the space the appearance of a hidden garden or secluded greenhouse.
Dahi bombs ($10.99) are bite-sized appetizers, made with crispy puris, creamy yogurt and tangy chutneys.
Despite their small size, their explosive moniker is well-earned. The contrast between the crunchy shell and the strong, saucy fillings creates a startling burst of flavour, like a firework going off in your mouth.
The tandoor paneer tikka ($14.99) consists of tender paneer wedges, marinated in yogurt, spices and zesty ginger-garlic paste.
The chicken momo platter ($20.99) allows diners to sample four different types of dumplings. Each dumpling has a distinctive appearance and flavour, making it difficult (if not outright impossible) to confuse them.
Tandoori momos are cooked in a clay oven with ginger-garlic paste and spices. As a result, their flavour is as vibrant as their bright red dough.
Steamed momos are soft and chewy, with pale, almost translucent skin. They provide a strong contrast to the kurkure momos, which are coated in crispy batter and then deep-fried.
Afghani momos strike a nice balance between these two extremes, with chewy skin reminiscent of a steamed momo and cashew nuts providing the crunch of a kurkure momo.
Chilli chicken kathi rolls ($16.99) are filled with mint sauce, onion slices and spicy, stir-fried chicken, then wrapped in flaky lachha paratha.
Seasoned fries are served on the side, as well as a ramekin of spicy dipping sauce.
Chowmein spring rolls ($9.49) are an inventive take on a classic Chinese dish.
Instead of vegetables or meat, these crunchy wrappers are filled with saucy chowmein noodles. The spring rolls are then cut diagonally and garnished with onions and parsley.
The golden petal elixir ($8.99) is a bright yellow mocktail, made with passionfruit, elderflower, lime juice, mint and Sprite.
The pink guava crush ($8.99) is its rose-coloured counterpart. It also makes use of lime juice, mint, and Sprite, but pairs them with juicy pink guava fruit.
Both mocktails are sweet and fizzy, but the pink guava crush was a particular standout. Its light, fruity flavour helped to balance out the heavier flavours of the entrees.
Cheffy's is located at 1559 O’Connor Drive.
