Heavy storms sweeping through the Niagara-on-the-Lake region this past weekend ultimately forced Ontario's largest tulip farm to pull the plug on one of its much-anticipated events at the very last minute.
Over the weekend, TASC Tulip Farm announced that it Mother's Day tulip event had been cancelled just one day before it was set to take place due to severe weather across the region.
"We are heartbroken to share that tomorrow's Mother’s Day (May 10, 2026) at the TASC Tulip Farm has been cancelled," read the Instagram statement. "An unexpected flash storm moved through the area, bringing lightning, extreme wind, heavy rain, and flash flooding conditions across the farm."
Guests on site during the storm were safely evacuated, but the aftermath dampened the farm's plans to host hundreds of people celebrating their moms the following morning.
The stormy conditions, part of the unpredictable spring weather that's plagued the province this year, made it impossible to safely host the event as planned, especially with thousands of visitors expected to walk through the blooming tulip fields for photo ops and flower picking.
While the cancellation was disappointing news for many people, an outpouring of support came in from people who had been looking forward to spending their Sunday at the farm.
"To make a decision like this on an important day must have been difficult. I hope the impact of the rain is not going to be too drastic," one user commented on Instagram. And similar sentiments echoed on the organizer's page.
Ticket holders were left wondering whether they will receive refunds for the cancelled event. Thankfully, TASC Tulip Farm confirmed that all ticket holders have been contacted individually and will receive a refund within three to five days.
Regardless of the setback, the tulip season itself isn't over just yet.
Organizers says it still plans to remain open throughout the week, weather permitting, and is making changes to accommodate guests who missed out on the Mother's Day experience.
For instance, visitors attending the May 16 finale event on the farm will now be allowed to pick 20 tulips with their ticket instead of the usual 10 — an attempt to soften the blow of the cancelled holiday celebration and encourage guests to return.
Tickets to TASC Tulip Farm, a vast 55-acre field featuring more than three million tulip blooms each year, range from $19.66 to $78.60, depending on the experience, and can be bought directly on the farm's website.
TASC Tulip Farm is located at 1173 Line 3 Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.
