Hundreds of lanterns set to light up Toronto park on the water this fall

Toronto is set to light up next month as the city preps to host the Water Lantern Festival on September 19 and 20. Hundreds of people are expected to attend for an evening of food, music and community, all making way for the stunning moment when lanterns are released onto the water at sunset.

The event promises a hands-on experience, as guests decorate their own lanterns with messages, wishes or artwork before setting them afloat. At past events, people have manifested their hopes and dreams and even written to lost loved ones, sharing in a meaningful moment as the night sky fills with a flickering glow.

Although the lantern release is the main event, food trucks, a vendor market and even a little scavenger hunt are all part of the itinerary.

Things to keep in mind

Arrive early so you can enjoy all the perks before the lantern release. The gates open three hours before sunset to ensure there is time for all of the event's other activities.

Since this is an outdoor event, essentials like a jacket (remember, it will be mid-September and you'll be by the water), blanket (FYI the Date Night package comes with your choice of blanket or a throw to share), camping chairs and bug spray are recommended. Feel free to bring whatever else you think you'd need for an outdoor adventure!

Food and drink vendors will be available on site so you can purchase bites and beverages on the grounds. Festival goers are not permitted to bring outside alcoholic beverages or their own lanterns.

Looking after the environment

In keeping with the festival's spirit, all lanterns are crafted from eco-friendly and biodegradable materials, and organizers ensure the park is fully cleaned afterward — ticket pricing includes the safe collection and removal of lanterns from the water.

Tickets

Tickets start at $42.99 — Early Bird pricing is available until September 1. The general admission includes entry to the festival, a lantern kit with a marker to decorate, a tealight, and a drawstring bag, plus a chance to participate in the scavenger hunt.

Different package options are also available.

This is only the Toronto iteration of the event, which takes place throughout North America, giving people the opportunity to do something different and wholesome before the summer officially wraps up. Gates on both days open at 4:30 p.m.

The Water Lantern Festival is taking place at Downsview Park, located at 70 Canuck Drive in North York.
