The Cincinnati Reds first baseman beat out the likes of Sidney Crosby, Alexandre Bilodeau, Maelle Ricker, Jonathan Toews, Christine Nesbitt and Steve Nash to name but a few others that likely received consideration for the honour.

Voted on by panel of 11 journalists, the award is named after the former Toronto Star Sports editor and was founded in 1936. Crosby took home the prize in 2009.
