Hot Ticket: The Airborne Toxic Event, The Drowning Men, Mona, Deer Tick, Toubab Krewe, Elliott Brood, The Wailers

Live music picks for TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15 through SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2011.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15 / THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE / $24.50 / 19+
The band that took its name from the Dom DeLillo classic White Noise already rocked Toronto earlier this year, and now they're back, still in support of their album All At Once. Admittedly, I felt these guys would be a one-hit wonder after their single Sometime Around Midnight was huge in 2008, but they've proved me wrong, and it looks like they're here to stay. The Drowning Men and Mona will offer support.

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16 / DEER TICK / LEE'S PALACE /529 BLOOR W / $20.63 / 19+

Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, Deer Tick's music spans several genres including folk, alt-rock, and country. Their latest album, Diving Providence, sees the band unleash a rawer sound than in the past, and the results are fantastic. They even performed on Letterman about a month ago — so, good for them.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 17 / TOUBAB KREWE / REVIVAL RESTAURANT BAR / 783 COLLEGE / $15 ADVANCE, $20 AT THE DOOR / 19+

Now for something a little different. This instrumental quintet, hailing from North Carolina, draws on a number of music styles and instruments from around the world in their soaring tracks. They perform with 12- and 21-string harp lutes, djembes, Malian horsehair fiddles, etc. And the music they perform is mind-blowing — not one to be missed.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18 / ELLIOTT BROOD / THE PHOENIX / 410 SHERBOURNE / $20 / 19+

Toronto-bred alt-country outfit Elliott Brood is coming home for a show at The Phoenix. The band is currently touring the country in support of their latest album, Days Into Years, which is one of the stronger LPs that you'll hear this year. Their style of music, which they refer to as "death country," is definitely pleasing to the ears, and they put on one hell of a live show.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 19 / THE WAILERS / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON / $31 / 19+

These guys need no introduction. As the band of one of the greatest artists of our time, Bob Marley, The Wailers have etched their place into the annals of music history. Some of the original members have passed on, but the spirit of the band, and the music itself, lives on in this incarnation.
