Bravestation

Hot Ticket: Bravestation, The Hoof and the Heel, Craig Stickland, Paint, The Joys, XI & Eskmo, Lauryn Hill, Chromeo, MNDR, Young Empires & more

Live music picks for WEDNESDAY JANUARY 19 through TUESDAY JANUARY 25, 2011.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 19 / BRAVESTATION / SUPERMARKET / 268 AUGUSTA AVE / PWYC / 19+
Bravestation's five-track EP, quickly being passed around music blogs, remains free for download on their bandcamp page. You can also try out one of their tracks - "Colour Us With Youth" - recently featured on blogTO's The Neighbourhood Mixtape. The band joins The Hoof and the Heel and Craig Stickland for Supermarket's weekly PWYC Wednesdays Go Pop!

THURSDAY JANUARY 20 / PAINT / HORSESHOE TAVERN / 368 QUEEN ST W / $5 / 19+
Locals Paint have a solid reputation as a true rock-and-roll band, especially amongst their loyal followers. Their 2009 release Can You Here Me? gained positive reviews, and concert-goers have called their shows high-energy, positive and inspiring. London, Ontario's The Joys will open before Paint hits center stage.

FRIDAY JANUARY 21 / XI & ESKMO / WRONGBAR / 1279 QUEEN ST W / $10.50 / 19+
XI, Toronto's rising star of bass-driven electronic music, joins forces with Bay Area's Eskmo at Wrongbar on Friday night. Still young, XI's reputation continues to grow locally and internationally, garnering praise for his epic live performances. Toronto's Bombaman and Kevin McPhee are also set to play at the show.

SATURDAY JANUARY 22 / LAURYN HILL / SOUND ACADEMY / 11 POLSON ST / SOLD OUT / 19+
After hosting two of the biggest, best hip hop shows last year with Wiz Khalifa and M.I.A, Sound Academy gives the stage over to Lauryn Hill, still a legend even though her quintuple-Grammy-winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropped way back in 1998. A new single called "Repercussions" leaked early last year, bringing about rumours of a sophomore album. Seeing as this show is sold-out, seems many fans are willing to make a long, wintry trek to witness one of best female hip-hop artists of our time in action.

SUNDAY JANURAY 23 / CHROMEO / THE OPERA HOUSE / 735 QUEEN ST E / $27.50 / ALL AGES
Chromeo returns to Toronto, bringing their Risky Business Tour to The Opera House. The dance party opens with New York City electronic duo MNDR and one of Toronto's breakout bands of 2010, Young Empires. Based on their previous show at the Phoenix, a smaller venue like The Opera House should create a louder, more raucous atmosphere - perfect for those looking to get their kicks, unafraid to shoulder-to-shoulder and share sweat with their crowd-mates.
