The sight of snow in downtown Toronto had many people doing a double-take over the Thanksgiving long weekend, but with temperatures still in the mid-teens through mid-October, views of wintery city streets had many online commenters initially confused.
Downtown intersections were totally covered in snow — or at least what appeared to be snow — on Sunday, giving locals an early preview of the miserable winter weather looming just on the horizon.
Posts shared to social media over the weekend show the King and Victoria intersection, along with Bay and Temperance, blanketed in a layer of artificial snow.
Streets were transformed into an artificial winter wonderland as part of a shoot for an upcoming Nissan commercial, with the simulated snowfall so convincing that many commenters were left wondering when they missed the storm.
"When did it snow? I live in Toronto. I don't see no snow," wrote one commenter.
Others were amused by the fact that fake snow was used in Toronto, potentially just weeks ahead of the first snowfall of the season.
"They couldn't just wait a month to film this part? They would have the real thing," wrote one user.
Another noted that "They could've saved so much money and wait another month. Snow wouldve been there for free lol."
Others accused video posters of fakery or asked if the clips were created using AI.
But, fake or not, the views of snow-blanketed sidewalks and cars sent some viewers spiralling.
"The realism is triggering," reads one comment.
As triggering as the fake snow may be for some, Toronto likely still has a few weeks of mild weather to look forward to before the annual deep freeze sets in. Aside from overnight lows dipping to as chilly as 5 C, daytime highs are expected to remain in the double digits for the next two weeks.
