Toronto debut of 'Twisters' cancelled after attendees get a real storm instead

Tuesday's historic flooding forced closures and cancellations of events across Toronto, but perhaps none was quite as apt as a screening for a movie about violent storms being cancelled due to a real-life violent storm.

An advance IMAX screening of the new summer blockbuster, Twisters, was cancelled at Toronto's Scotiabank Theatre amid a record-breaking deluge, and the ensuing floods and power outages.

Globe and Mail film critic Barry Herz was among those scheduled to attend the hotly-anticipated sequel to the VFX-laden 1996 hit movie. Instead of catching the new disaster flick, Herz instead witnessed the aftermath of a very real storm, and documented as water dripped into the Cineplex building.

While the advance screening was scrapped due to weather complications, another early-access screening was held on Wednesday.

Tuesday's storm is now in the history books, but the general public won't have to wait long to witness another big weather event, when Twisters debuts in theatres on Friday, July 19.
