A restaurant that's been a stalwart on Seoul's Michelin Guide for years is opening its first Canadian location in Toronto this week.
The name Gebang Sikdang has been synonymous with raw marinated crab in Seoul for more than three decades, but for many a Toronto resident, it, and the dish it's best known for, is completely new.
Not for long, though, because Gebang Sikdang is gearing up to open its first Canadian location in Toronto this week, with the help of Toronto Japanese food favourite, Katsuya.
Setting up shop at Katsuya's Gerrard East location this Friday, July 17, the collaboration is actually the second time the two have joined forces, after a massively popular pop-up at Katsuya's North York location earlier this spring.
Boasting a Bib Gourmand distinction on Seoul's Michelin Guide for nearly a decade, Michelin describes the restaurant as a spot that "caters to a trend-conscious crowd with its polished interior and its wide selection of raw crab dishes," but what, exactly, are these raw crab dishes?
An immensely popular dish in Korea that's decidedly more difficult to find in Toronto, marinated raw crab, or gejang, features whole crabs marinated in various soy or chili-based sauces. Spicy, sweet, and tangy, you can think of it like the seafood version of a particularly saucy chicken wing.
On top of the whole marinated crabs, you can also expect a handful of other droolworthy crab-based dishes, like crab roe bibimbap and plenty of banchan to round out the whole meal.
Katsuya and Gebang Sikdang are located at 66 Gerrard St. E.
