Ultra-cheap sushi shop just opened its first downtown Toronto location

An Ontario sushi restaurant with locations from Markham to Midtown has finally opened its first location in downtown Toronto.

When it comes to sushi in Toronto, you can't really go wrong. I mean, you can go wrong, like if, for example, you bought sushi that had been sitting in direct sunlight all day at a Highway 401 On Route, but I digress.

If you're eating sushi from an actual sushi restaurant in Toronto, you can't really go wrong, and the city certainly isn't lacking in the sushi department whatsoever, but that doesn't make it any less exciting when we get a new spot to sink our teeth into when the craving for raw fish, rice and nori hits.

Residents and frequenters of the Yonge and Dundas area are the latest group in the city to get a brand-new sushi spot, as Markham-based Maki Mart just opened its first downtown Toronto location.

Now boasting a total of four locations in Toronto in North York, Scarborough, Midtown and Yonge and Dundas, alongside the Markham location, Maki Mart has been a hidden gem for almost unbelievably affordable sushi for years now, but, before March 2026, downtown Toronto was always left out.

The star of the show at Maki Mart is, as you may have guessed, maki. The menu is populated by an extensive selection of hand rolls, running the gamut from California and salmon avocado rolls to duck and uni.

The rolls are served pre-wrapped, so you can take them on the go, so I'm already sensing that they'll be a hit among students at the nearby TMU campus, but, hey, you could even pick one up to keep you fed while you do some shopping at the Eaton Centre, or sneak them into a show at the Yonge and Dundas Cineplex.

The best part of all? They're seriously affordable. The price of a single roll starts at less than $3, with the majority, including popular options like tuna mayo and spicy salmon, coming in just under $4.

Specialty rolls, like their very popular fatty toro roll and sesame lobster, are priced around $5, and premium rolls, including the aforementioned golden uni, go for just under $9.

In any case, you can walk away with a seriously substantial snack for less than the price of a 7-Eleven egg sandwich, and that's something even the most discerning of sushi snobs can get behind.

Maki Mart Downtown is located at 205 Dundas St. W.
