Massive food recall hits Canada as major grocer warns of potential health risk

People are urged to check their fridges after a massive food recall was issued across Canada due to a potential health risk.

On Wednesday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall and stated that affected products are being pulled from stores in Canada.

"The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination," reads the statement.

Sobeys Capital Inc. initiated the recall, which involves several raw and pre-prepared food items containing cheese, such as carbonara pasta, pasta salad, cauliflower cakes, chicken and bean wraps, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed phyllo pastries, stuffed fish, and salmon pinwheels.

The products were distributed in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. Products were sold in Sobeys banner stores such as Coop, Foodland, Sobeys, IGA, Safeway, and Thrifty Foods.

As of Wednesday, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the food recall. According to the CFIA, it's ensuring that the industry is removing the recalled products from stores.

Canadians are urged not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the recalled products. Instead, make sure to throw it out and return it to where it was purchased.

Food that's contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick. Some of the symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. People who are pregnant are especially at risk, as well as those with weakened immune systems. In severe cases of illness, people may die. If you suspect you became sick from consuming the recalled product, contact your healthcare provider.

The recall has been categorized as a class one, which means that "there is a high risk that consuming the food may lead to serious health problems or death."

Health Canada also recently announced that certain Hello Fresh meal kits are being recalled due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination in the cheese.
