Canada-wide recall issued over listeria risk in popular meal kits

Canadians with Hello Fresh meal delivery subscriptions should check their orders due to an urgent recall.

On Monday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a nationwide recall on certain Hello Fresh meal kits over the risk of "microbial contamination." According to the CFIA, the recall was triggered by Hello Fresh.

"The affected products are being recalled from the marketplace due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination," reads the statement.

The products that are part of the recall include bags of shredded Parmesan cheese, cheese curds, feta cheese, goat cheese, and mozzarella cheese in various sizes.

So far, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the affected products. The agency said it's still conducting a food safety investigation, which could lead to other products being recalled as well.

"The CFIA is verifying that [the] industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace," the agency stated.

Customers should check their fridge to see if they have the recalled products. Don't consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the affected products and make sure to throw them out or return them to where they were purchased. If you suspect that you became sick from consuming any of the recalled cheese, make sure to contact your health care provider.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes "may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick." Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. People who are pregnant, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The recall has been categorized as a class one, which means that "there is a high risk that consuming the food may lead to serious health problems or death."
