A Toronto restaurant that has been a neighbourhood staple for the past 25 years has officially closed for good.
There was a time when Little Portugal, the strips of Dundas West and College between Dovercourt and Lansdowne, was, more or less, the only place in the city where you could find great Portuguese food.
That was decades ago, mind you, and, in the years since, Portuguese cuisine, much like every other global influence in the city, has outgrown the bounds of its historic enclave and planted roots in nearly every neighbourhood.
Now, you don't have to look farther than a few blocks in any given corner of the city to sink your teeth into simmering fish stews or salty sardines; the city is rife with stalwart institutions that do Portuguese cuisine proud.
In the case of the Junction Triangle, one such staple, since 1998 anyway, has been Piri Piri Grill.
Fittingly named for Portugal's most ubiquitous culinary export, piri piri chicken, the restaurant has been a leader on the Portuguese cuisine scene in Toronto for the better part of a quarter century, far before newer, trendy establishments like Taberna Lx were even a twinkle in their owners' eyes.
Still, nothing in this world is immune to change, not even stalwart restaurants backed by generational fanbases, and, as of November 2025, Piri Piri is officially a thing of the past.
"After more than 25 incredible years, Piri Piri Grill has closed its doors," a post on the restaurant's Instagram account reads.
"Since opening in 1998, it has been an honour to serve this community, to welcome generations of guests, and to share countless memories and celebrations around the table."
Still, it's not all bad news. The post goes on to tease that, "This is not a goodbye but a new beginning," and tells its fans and followers to "stay tuned" for a new concept and brand set to be unveiled in January of 2026.
While it's never pleasant to see an old favourite bite the dust, Toronto can at least rest easy knowing that this isn't the last we'll see from the people behind Piri Piri Grill.
Piri Piri Grill was formerly located at 1444 Dupont Ave.
