The body of Byblos Uptown, the Yonge Street sister location to the Entertainment District's beloved Byblos, isn't even cold yet after closing its doors on Oct. 20, 2025, but a new venture is already setting up shop.
Don't worry, though; the new restaurant doesn't look like it'll be too large a jump from what was there before.
Byblos Uptown had held court in a sweeping space on Yonge Street for seven years before suddenly issuing a statement on Instagram that it would be closing down for good in late October, offering little by way of explanation and only hinting at a future concept on its way.
The INK Entertainment-owned (Animl, Akira Back) is just the latest from the hospitality giant to be overhauled this year, meeting the same fate as Clio and Margo, now Honey Chinese and Primadonna, and Pink Sky, now Vinny.
Now, set to open to the public exactly a month after its predecessor shuttered, the hospitality company's latest venture, a Greek restaurant called Melani, is waiting in the wings.
Admittedly, it doesn't immediately strike as a breathtaking transformation, swapping a Mediterranean restaurant (that skewed Middle Eastern, but still) for a Greek one, but we in Toronto are suckers for movement of any kind, so it's still exciting.
And sure, while Byblos and Melani's culinary inspirations come from the same coast, the two concepts will still have their key differences.
For one, while Byblos had a distinctly boho-chic bent to it, Melani purports to be a "modern Greek" spot, so one can safely expect a more contemporary, though likely still coastal, atmosphere, with Greek food staples reimagined for 2025 palates.
The finer details on Melani have yet to be revealed: the only information available at the time of publication is a website landing page that boasts the slogan "from the coast of Greece to the heart of Uptown" and an Instagram account with a handful of ambient oceanic images.
So, while it may not be time yet to discover everything there is to know about Melani, at the very least, you can get excited for a chic Greek restaurant landing in the Yonge and Eglinton area in a matter of weeks.
Melani officially opens to the public on Thursday, Nov. 20, and is located at 2537 Yonge St.
