Toronto brewery shutting down after 13 years in business

A Toronto brewery that's been a neighbourhood stalwart for 13 years is closing permanently this month — but it might not be the end.

Nearly every neighbourhood in Toronto has its beloved breweries that serve as de facto community hubs. Leslieville has Avling (and, formerly, Saulter Street, too), and Ossington has Bellwoods.

For the Junction, one such institution, for more than a decade, has been Indie Alehouse.

A casual, friendly haunt, Indie Alehouse is everything you could possibly want in a neighbourhood brewpub. They've got burgers and pizza, and no fewer than a dozen different brews on tap at any given time.

The craft brewery became such an institution that, upon Eataly's arrival in Toronto, the brewery scored a coveted partnership with the international brand to open an offshoot location at the chain's inaugural Toronto location at Bay and Bloor.

While Indie Alehouse remains a superpower on the local brewing scene, not everything is built to last. This month, that'll prove true for the brewery's Junction location.

According to an Instagram post shared by Indie Alehouse on Wednesday, Oct. 1, the Junction brewpub, which has been a neighbourhood staple ever since it opened in 2012, will be closing its doors for good this month.

"It's been 13 yrs, and were [sic] sad to go, but have been unable to come to a new lease term with our LL and have decided its [sic] best we find another home," the caption reads.

It's not all doom and gloom, though.

The brewery assures its fans that, while the Junction brewpub is closing down, its location at Eataly Yorkville remains open for business, and they will continue to produce their brews.

Not only that, but the caption of the Instagram post also teases something new on the horizon, promising followers that Indie Alehouse will "have some better news to share soon."

While the details about what's next remain closely guarded, it's just like the old saying: when one keg empties, another one is tapped. That's what people say, right?

You still have until Oct. 11 to raise one last glass to the Junction location that started it all before it's gone for good, and then all we can do is wait for the next iteration of Indie Alehouse to make landfall.

Indie Alehouse is located at 2876 Dundas St. W.
