A nationwide recall has been issued for several types of frozen pastries due to possible salmonella contamination.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Importations Piu Che Dolci Inc. is recalling products under the brands Sweet Cream and D. Effe T. The recall was issued on April 19 in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and possibly other provinces and territories. The notice affects the general public, as well as hotels, restaurants, and institutions.
"This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak," reads the alert. "There has been one reported illness that may be associated with the consumption of these products."
The 10 affected products include:
If this sounds familiar, it's because this is the second nationwide recall this year for products distributed by Importations Piu Che Dolci Inc. due to the presence of salmonella.
On Jan. 18, the CFIA issued a nationwide recall of three types of Sweet Cream Mini Patisserie boxes. As of March 19, there were 79 confirmed illnesses, and 24 of those were hospitalized.
The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that the outbreak is over, and the investigation has been closed.
Under the new recall, the agency is urging consumers to check if they have the affected products. If you do, do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them. You can either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.
"Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick," warns the CFIA. "Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections."
