Toronto will soon be home to a vibrant new restaurant and bar from the city's most prolific Thai-food ambassadors.
From celebrated duo chef Nuit and Jeff Regular, the team behind Pai, Kiin and Sukhothai, Tha Phae Tavern will be a modern spot named for Chiang Mai's bustling Tha Phae Gate.
A historic landmark known for bazaars and night markets, the area is recognized as one of Thailand's most exciting international meeting places.
Inspired by the area's convergence of cultures, food and people, Tha Phae Tavern is set to invigorate 221 Richmond Street West with vivacious energy along with modern Thai food and handcrafted cocktails.
Though planning is still in progress, the team says chef Nuit's menu is inspired by classic Thai drinking snacks and small plates that combine Thai flavours with global influences.
Tha Phae Tavern's private karaoke rooms, on-site photo booth and claw machine will apparently further capture the hubbub of Thailand's Tha Phae Gate.
"The very first time I visited Tha Phae Gate, I was awestruck by how unique the place was,” explains Jeff Regular. "It was a unique mix of locals and international travellers from all over the world. I could get a burger or a slice of pizza next to traditional Thai barbecue skewers."
The area "is a cultural hub where diverse traditions, cuisines, and people from all over the world come together," he adds.
"With Tha Phae Tavern," says chef Nuit Regular, "we're creating a space where people can come together, enjoy incredible food and drinks, make new friends, and create memories in a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere."
Located in the ever-evolving Fifth complex, Tha Phae Tavern was created in partnership with Oliver Geddes, owner of The Fifth Group, Ben Geddes, and Janet Zuccarini, of Gusto 54 Restaurant Group.
The restaurant and bar will be housed in the space previously occupied by Selva, the now-shuttered, jungle-themed hideaway.
Gone is Selva's black-light heavy décor, replaced by the Regulars with a bold colour scheme, warm brick and intricately-patterned Thai accents meant to evoke the look, feel and energy of Thailand's lively streets.
Tha Phae Tavern is slated to open in April, 2025.
