Mysterious $60M superyacht docks in Toronto and nobody knows who owns it

A lavish superyacht is turning heads on the Toronto waterfront, and nobody actually knows who owns the thing.

Stretching over 46 metres from bow to stern, the massive Bella Vita superyacht from Dutch shipbuilder Feadship is making a bit of a scene at its moorings next to the Toronto Music Garden — just as much for its luxury stature as the mystery surrounding the yacht's owner.

The superyacht previously belonged to billionaire U.S. businessman and real estate developer Dwight C. Schar and operated under the name Excellence V, but was reportedly sold this past April to an anonymous buyer and subsequently renamed "Bella Vita."

Bella Vita departed from Kingston to Toronto on Aug. 6, and its recent arrival on the waterfront has many wondering who purchased the yacht.

While some have pointed to Nova Scotia tuna tycoon John Risley as the potential owner, Risley actually owns a much larger 75-metre superyacht which shares the name Bella Vita. These are, in fact, two different ships, creating a bit of confusion for anyone trying to identify the 2026 buyer of the ship now moored in Toronto.

The smaller Bella Vita now floating on Toronto's waterfront was built in 2010 and refitted in 2024, featuring a sleek exterior by Dubois Naval Architects with a vaguely military grey paint job.

What passersby don't see, however, are the yacht's lavish interiors designed by RWD, which include an enormous bar and a semi-enclosed sundeck.

According to The Superyacht Times, the vessel can accommodate up to 10 guests in its five staterooms, boasts a cruising speed of 15 knots, and can reach a top speed of 19 knots thanks to a pair of Caterpillar engines.
