Giant void gradually becoming Toronto's future King West subway station

A massive void below Toronto's King and Bathurst intersection will one day be bustling with commuters, and while you won't be able to ride into the new King West subway station for a few more years, you can still get a glimpse of the enormous underground project to shape this station on the new Ontario Line.

The 15.6-kilometre subway will add 15 new stations on the city's rapid transit network, connecting an expanded transit hub at Exhibition Place in the southwest with the new Line 5 Eglinton at Don Mills in the northeast.

Metrolinx recently shared an update on the hidden construction project, offering the public a taste of the recent progress taking shape below the busy intersection.

Metrolinx explains that the yellow membrane and steel visible in photos are "signs of major progress, as crews advance waterproofing and rebar installation ahead of concrete pours."

The transit agency added that the ongoing works will help to "give this new underground station its strength and stability."

With the station now starting to take shape, here are some things to know.

When did construction start?

Early works began in 2021, and construction kicked into high gear by early 2024.

What happened to King-Bathurst station?

King-Bathurst was quietly renamed to King West in 2026, along with two other stations on the line.

When will King West subway station open?

All 15 stations, including King West, were previously slated to open in 2031, but the timeline has since been bumped back to a vague "early 2030s" window.
