University of Toronto just ranked among world's best schools in these categories

Canada is home to many outstanding universities, but the fact that three of them rank among the best in the world across every single subject is an impressive achievement.

Several universities in Canada are standing out globally in all areas of study, according to a new report by QS Top Universities, which evaluates universities worldwide.

The report categorizes programs under five broad subjects: arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

"The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject features 55 narrow subjects across five broad subject areas," states the report. "This year's rankings are our biggest yet, with over 1,900 institutions included this year, including over 300 which appear for the first time ever."

Harvard University and the University of Oxford are among the top in the world across all categories. And compared to the previous year, universities in Southern Asia saw the highest percentage of improvement, while the majority of new universities that joined the rankings are from East Asia.

Universities' rankings depend on how they scored across several criteria: employability, research and discovery, and global engagement. And three universities across Canada got some pretty impressive marks, ranking among the world's top 50 across all subjects.

Other schools, such as the University of Waterloo, the University of Alberta, and McMaster University, were recognized for being outstanding in several subjects. However, these well-rounded Canadian universities consistently came out on top. Here's how they ranked globally for every subject:
