go transit closures this weekend

GO Transit outage will make it a nightmare getting to and from Toronto this weekend

GO Transit outages this weekend will throw a wrench in travel plans for anyone relying on the Lakeshore West Line to get to and from Toronto.

Metrolinx will halt service on the Lakeshore West Line between Aldershot GO and Union Station starting on Saturday, March 21, until the end of service on Sunday, March 22.

The regional transit agency states that the closure is necessary "to accommodate critical track work."

According to Metrolinx, "Planned construction is taking place on the Lakeshore West corridor, as part of GO Expansion, with work continuing at Long Branch GO and on the Burloak Drive underpass."

During the closure, crews will work to rehabilitate infrastructure that Metrolinx states is "critical for maintaining safe and reliable service on the Lakeshore West line, including work at the Etobicoke Creek bridge and Bronte Creek."

Metrolinx adds that this work can only be carried out safely during modified train service windows.

During the partial route closure, trains will continue to serve stops along the Lakeshore West Line between Niagara Falls and Aldershot GO, though trains that were scheduled to terminate at Confederation and West Harbour GO stations will not operate this weekend.

GO will be operating replacement buses to cover the gap in service, which will serve stops at West Harbour, Aldershot, Burlington, Oakville and Clarkson GO stations, before switching to an express route to the Union Station Bus Terminal in downtown Toronto.

Regular service along the Lakeshore West Line will resume on Monday, March 23.

Metrolinx warns commuters that there will be no GO Transit service to or from Appleby, Bronte, Port Credit, Long Branch, Mimico or Exhibition GO, and instead advises alternative transit options like the TTC.

However, even the TTC will come with its own share of obstacles for riders this weekend. The local transit agency announced it will shut down a 5.5-kilometre stretch of the Line 1 Yonge-University subway this weekend, adding further complications for those relying on public transit in the coming days.
