ttc subway closure this weekend

Huge stretch of TTC subway will shut down for entire weekend with no shuttle buses

TTC subway closures this weekend will shut down a significant stretch of the Line 1 Yonge-University line, and there won't even be shuttle buses to help riders get around the disruption.

The TTC plans to halt service on Line 1 between St George and St Andrew stations for the whole weekend, and even Friday night commutes will be affected by the planned outage.

Service on Line 1 will shut down starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, and remain closed through Sunday, Jan. 25.

The outage is just the latest in a string of closures along this stretch of the line that the TTC attributes to "planned station work." This work includes the re-tiling of stations, a task that seemed like a final step in the station renovations when it began almost a year ago, yet work drags on in 2026.

As with previous closures on this portion of Line 1, the TTC has opted not to run replacement shuttle buses. In other such closures, the transit agency has cited construction and traffic in the area as impediments to the flow of commuters.

However, the closure is within relatively easy walking or streetcar distance of Line 1's Yonge St. leg, along with the Line 2 Bloor-Danforth, and the TTC has shared a list of alternate transit options to help riders navigate the closure.

Even commuters just looking to top up their Presto cards will be inconvenienced, as Museum, Queen's Park, St Patrick and Osgoode stations will all be closed throughout the disruption.

Other stations along the closure will be open for fare purchases and surface route connections.

The TTC states that regular subway service will resume on Line 1 on Monday, Jan. 26.

But riders shouldn't get too comfortable following this weekend's outage. The TTC plans to shutter the exact same stretch of track the following weekend for more station renovation work.
