Toronto's newest social lounge is for people who are over the nightlife scene

Toronto's nightlife scene is a serious backseat for many in the city amid Dry January, and sober social butterflies will soon have a fun alternative to bars and clubs: a wellness lounge that ditches everything from loud music to alcohol.

Enter NRG Haus, short for Nourish, Recharge, Gather (but pronounced like "energy"): the latest addition to the city's wellness scene, set to open in Toronto next month.

"NRG Haus is designed as a contrast therapy (a quick alternation between hot and cold temperatures) and alcohol-free social space," says William Edwards, Director of Operations at NRG Haus.

Edwards tells blogTO that NRG Haus is "combining sauna and cold plunge experiences with a functional mocktail lounge," adding that "The goal is to create a place where recovery, connection, and good energy can coexist, whether someone is coming in solo or with friends."

The driving force behind the concept is Ivan Ho, a Toronto-based entrepreneur and founder of NRG Haus, whose personal journey to sobriety sparked the idea.

Following the gruelling COVID-19 pandemic — which nearly forced the closure of Ho's well-established fitness studio, Fit Factory, and coincided with his divorce — his lifestyle spiralled into increased alcohol consumption, burnout, and brain fog. In 2023, Ho committed to making drastic lifestyle changes, leading to his sobriety and a renewed focus on improving his mental health.

However, whenever he tried to get out and socialize, he found the city lacked spaces where alcohol wasn't the main attraction — cue dark, overcrowded bars where drinking felt almost mandatory. That's when the idea for NRG Haus came to fruition.

The newest addition to the city's lineup of wellness businesses offers guests four immersive cold-plunge tubs, each accompanied by a 16-foot LED screen displaying everything from ocean waves to icefields — a welcome distraction while sitting in three-degree water. The screens will also periodically feature guided meditation, elevating the cold plunge into a more mindful experience.

The space will also comprise a sauna, a lounge area with a water vapour fireplace, and a non-alcoholic bar powered through a partnership with Sobr Market.

The bar will offer more than 20 functional beverages inspired by flavours from across the globe. But what exactly is a "functional beverage?"

"Our drinks are built around hydration, mineral replenishment, and ingredients commonly associated with focus, recovery, or balance. They're designed to complement the physiological demands of contrast therapy while still delivering the social feel of a bar, without the after-effects of alcohol," Edwards explains.

NRG Haus is set to open its doors to the public in early February, with an official launch date to be announced soon. The contrast therapy lounge will be located at 171 E Liberty St., Unit 113.
