ttc fare capping

TTC will be free after 47 monthly trips in 2026

The TTC is rolling out a new fare capping program next year that's intended to make transit more affordable for commuters in Toronto.

On Monday, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and TTC Chair Jamaal Myers announced that a new fare capping system is coming to the TTC in September 2026. Under the new model, TTC riders will automatically ride for free after taking 47 trips in a calendar month with no upfront costs.

"We're making life more affordable for people who rely on transit," said Mayor Chow. "With fare capping, you pay as you go, and once you've taken 47 trips in a month, the rest of your rides are free. No more deciding whether you can afford a monthly pass upfront. No more overpaying if you don't ride enough to make a pass worth it."

A monthly TTC pass for an adult currently costs $156, and $128.15 for a senior or youth, and the total must be paid upfront. The new fare model automatically works for all commuters, whether you're using a PRESTO, debit, or credit card, and applies to all fare types, including adults, seniors, and youth.

"Fare capping represents a fundamental shift in how Torontonians pay for transit. It builds on the TTC's successful roll out of Open Payments," said TTC Chair Myers. "Taken together with Mayor Chow's and the TTC's board's decision to freeze fares for the third straight year, fare capping is an important step in building a transit system that’s affordable for Torontonians."

Transit advocacy groups across the city, including TTCriders, called the new model a "major win" for TTC users.

"This is a major victory for transit riders after years of grassroots advocacy," said Andrew Pulsifer, Executive Director of TTCriders.

"Riders tell us again and again that the cost of transit is a barrier to getting around the city. Today's announcement is a direct result of thousands of people speaking up, signing petitions, sharing their stories, and demanding a fairer system. Fare capping will save riders money, remove financial uncertainty, and make the TTC more accessible to everyone."

Mayor Chow says she will ask the TTC to plan for an even lower fare cap of 40 rides for the 2027 budget.
