The University of Toronto (U of T) was just named the second-best university worldwide according to sustainability rankings.
The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026 report ranked U of T second overall with an impressive 99.8 score, but it wasn't enough for the institution to secure the top spot for a third consecutive year.
U of T ranked behind only Lund University in Sweden, which scored a perfect 100, though the Toronto institution is still able to boast a top-two spot for a fourth straight year.
Among the school's sustainability initiatives, U of T recently unveiled a vast new geoexchange system — the largest in Canada — and has recently debuted a new climate research institute.
U of T's environmental impact scores were all exceptional, scoring 95.1 in environmental sustainability, 99.9 in environmental education, and 98.9 in environmental research.
In the social impact category, the school was rated at 99.8 in equality, 99.3 in knowledge exchange, 98.4 for impact of education, 96.4 for employability and opportunities, and 97.4 in health and wellbeing.
In the governance category, the school registered an impressive 98.7 score.
While U of T was unable to retain the top spot it held in two previous rankings, it still ranked as the most sustainable Canadian university, a title it has now held for four consecutive years.
U of T outpaced other top Canadian schools in the ranking, including the University of British Columbia (#5), McGill University (#9), and Western University (#24).
Here are the top 10 most sustainable universities in the world.
