Toronto's Textile Museum of Canada is gearing up to reopen this fall after suddenly closing its doors to the public in February 2025, citing funding struggles in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as the primary reason behind the difficult decision.
In a recent update shared on Instagram and its website, the museum confirmed its return, writing, "We're looking back and moving forward, returning with renewed energy, a strengthened commitment to financial health, and a dynamic lineup of new programs designed to inspire and engage in time for our 50th anniversary celebrations."
The museum promises new exhibitions and programming to mark both its reopening and milestone anniversary.
Despite being closed for the last eight months, the museum remained active, hosting workshops and events in collaboration with other organizations, as well as launching a fundraising campaign.
Museum staff turned to the public to help raise $150,000 by July 31, and Toronto delivered. The fundraiser met its goal, ultimately allowing the Textile Museum of Canada to prepare for its reopening in October.
It's welcome news after what seemed like the potential end of the Textile Museum just a few months earlier. A February statement stated that the museum would be closing due to "the significant challenge of regaining and expanding our audiences following the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns."
The announcement went on to explain that, although the institution attempted to revive interest through "an ambitious expansion of exhibition programming and fundraising," those efforts ultimately failed.
"Unfortunately, changes in audience behaviours and funding priorities have resulted in an unexpected shortfall in our finances, resulting in operating constraints," the statement continued.
However, with the outpouring of support from the community and the museum's perseverance, the institution, known for its preservation and documentation of various fabrics, will soon be back in action.
The Textile Museum of Canada will reopen to the public on October 30 and is located at 55 Centre Avenue.
