There are moments in life when fact truly feels stranger than fiction, and this is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of those moments.
We'll just rip the band-aid off: former prime minister Justin Trudeau was just spotted on a dinner date with popstar-turned-"astronaut" Katy Perry in Montreal. No, we're not reading to you from a MadLibs page — it actually happened.
Originally reported by TMZ on Tuesday, July 28, a video has surfaced that shows Trudeau and Perry dining and chatting with one another over a meal at Le Plateau's Le Violon, one of celebrity chef Danny Smiles' numerous local hotspots.
Known for its contemporary explorations of English and French cuisines, the restaurant, which only opened a year ago, is now a fixture on both Montreal's Michelin Guide and Canada's 100 Best Restaurants lists.
All of this to say, though this pair feels like it was plucked from the deepest recesses of Canada's collective imaginations, at least we can be sure they had a great meal.
According to TMZ's article, an eyewitness observed the duo sharing dishes, drinking cocktails, and even being greeted by Chef Smiles himself, before heading into the kitchen to personally thank staff.
A follow-up article posted just hours later by the outlet claims that Chef Smiles confirmed the connection between the two seemed to be a strictly platonic one, with no visible PDA seeming to take place during the meal.
It's a deeply unlikely friendship that's blooming here, but we hate to say it, the match-up kind of makes sense to us.
Perry dominated headlines earlier this month when she and ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom confirmed their split after seven years, while Trudeau underwent a very public split of his own, from former wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, back in 2023 — to say nothing of when he dumped the entire country by stepping down as prime minister in 2024.
So if they aren't dating, perhaps they were simply commiserating over the woes of breaking up in the public eye. At the very least, they've got great taste in Montreal restaurants, and that's got to be worth something, right?
