union station flooding

Scenes of chaos at Union Station amid extreme flooding in Toronto

In the wake of an extreme rainstorm that caused widespread blackouts and flooding across Toronto, videos are surfacing showing the city's most central transit hub partially underwater.

At first glance, images and videos of cascades of water rushing down marble stairs at Union Station might make you think they've installed a new art piece, but you'd be wrong.

In fact, the videos surfacing from Union Station today are showing the true extent of flooding due to the heavy rainfall that deluged the city today.

Other videos show the floor on the main concourse of the station coated in several inches of water, with commuters (ever the gritty bunch) seeming relatively undeterred.

The situation outside of the station did not seem to be much better, as videos from the Bay Street exit under the Gardiner overpass show "a Titanic flooding situation" that extends on either side of the door.

In response to the flooding, all TTC trains on Line 1 are bypassing Union Station, so if the power outages didn't send you home from work early, you'll want to start planning your commute accordingly.

On the bright side, at least the city is already getting some great meme traction out of this hairy — or should I say soggy — situation.

The classic faked shot of sharks at Union Station is getting some renewed airplay today.

The flooding at Union is contributing to a chaotic evening of travel in the city, so it would be best to steer clear if you can avoid it.
