Equinox Fitness Clubs set to open Toronto location

Posted by Derek Flack / August 9, 2012

Equinox Fitness Club TorontoWatch out Toronto fitness clubs — yes, you with your dingy change rooms and sandpaper-esque towels — the Americans are coming. Following the push that LA Fitness has made in Toronto over the last year or so, Equinox Fitness Club is set to land in Toronto late this year (think December) with a 40,000 sq. ft. gym at Commerce Court.

For those unfamiliar with the brand, Equinox is the fitness club of the stars south of the border, boasting membership from Barack Obama amongst others. The Toronto gym is the club's second foray into the international market, joining a location opened in London last year.

Although specific details regarding the Toronto club have yet to be released, if one's to trust the teaser photos, fitness buffs in the Financial District should be happy. But all those nice amenities and lifestyle branding will cost you: monthly dues come in at $158.20 for access to the local gym, while a premium all-access membership (like the kind Obama has) will run you $169.50 for initiation and $206.79 monthly.

That ain't cheap — but hey, it's Equinox, man.

Great news -- I used to work out at Equinox in NYC and it puts any Toronto gym to shame. Hopefully they'll maintain the same high standards.

Wow, only $240 a month, what a bargain... at least the front desk looks cool, right?

Not sure where it says $240 a month but even if it was it would be worth every penny. :) I miss Equinox, can't wait to have it in TO!

Although it may seem $$$ it really is worth it if you utilize the gym's offerings.

Was a member in Boston and it is an incredible place

Equinox is definitely the higher-end mainstream gym in NYC. It's not really the gym of the stars -- niche gyms handle that market -- but it is a solid notch above New York Sports Club, Crunch, Bally's, NY Health & Racquet, etc.

Solid interior design skills too -- the high-end basement Equinox at Time Warner Center doesn't even have a single window but they make it work.

Condo and office building developers love Equinox because short of a Whole Foods it's just about the best large-format thing you can shove in the base of a new building. They soak up basements and second floors that other tenants do not want, all while populating your public spaces with lithe and attractive well-to-do gym users. This is exactly why Equinox was in fact bought by one of the largest US urban developers, Related Companies, in 2006.

Whatever you think of this particular brand or its origins, as a category of use it is a very good thing for Toronto and a healthy (pun) sign of downtown's vitality.

Sorry I complain so much about things costing money. I am a creative director but nobody reports to me and I only clear 45k a year.

I don't need to be pampered during a workout, all I need is a clean space with decent set of free weights, a few cable machines and spin classes during the winter and that shouldn't cost anyone more than $100/month. Even in Toronto.
There's a 24 hour Goodlife Fitness at Yonge near King that seems like a much better downtown deal both for amenities and choice of group classes.

To each their own I guess. I couldn't agree more with Binary though. Me, I'll forego the latest and greatest exercise class with all the cool people, or whatever it is that they're supposedly offering you, and pay my $60 a month to go the YMCA while suffering the indignity of bringing my own towel and razor.

I can't imagine what they could possibly offer that would justify tripling my monthly expense for a membership. If the facility incorporates an olympic sized pool and rock climbing gym and has muay thai, judo, real boxing and spin classes I'd jump at a membership. In the absence of that, no thanks. I'll save my $120 a month and they can figure out how to pay for their marketing minus one customer.

Then again, this is going in the financial district and I'm sure there will be lots of people in need of something to waste money on.

To each their own indeed!!! After seeing this video I'll opt for Equinox for sure! Have you seen this guy?

I bet they don't have him at the YMCA ;)

Why do people feel the need to whine about prices of things they do not understand? Why do you feel the need to justify yourself? Some people appreciate quality, aesthetics, service, environment. All things that fitness clubs here do not provide all that well. The next best club here would not come close to the experience provided by a club like Equinox. I've been waiting fifteen years for an Equinox in Canada.

Yes, a Chevy will get you where you are going, Taco Bell will feed you, the Gap will clothe you. All these utilitarian things are fine. But there are options that are more inspired. If you don't get it, you don't get it. But why waste your time whining? It's that kind of attitude that keeps Toronto stuck in mediocrity in many ways, whereas in other great cities, people from all walks of life have higher expectations of quality and experience.

^ that's a creepy way to disagree with someone. you pretend you are them, and put words in their mouth as a fallacious ad hominem. alright, alright, YOU WIN. I shoudln't advocate for local gym's that offer decent workouts at decent prices see YMCA).

agreed, mel ... although there are a few comments from "mel" so it's hard to tell who the real mel is. as far as "advocating," why compare apples to oranges just to assert your opinion on a product you've never even tested?

FYI, someone who throws around ten-dollar words should really know that one does not use an apostrophe when forming a plural, rather than the possessive case - i.e. "gym's". that use means something belonging to the gym or "the gym is ...". Not to be a prick, but "fallacious ad hominem"? Really?

another attack instead of a proper retort. we use words to get our ideas from our minds to other minds. harping on the use of an apostrophe misses the point entirely. you knew exactly what i meant, but you chose to focus on that which is inconsequential for the sake of ridicule. good job.

funny that you consider this particular gym an orange, and all other gyms as apples. marketing works miracles i guess.

i agree with you about my choice of words being a bit over bearing though. i wanted to point out the "ad homenim" bit, just didn't know how to contextualize it. i could have said "a bullshit ad homenim" perhaps. i don't know. main thing was that i'm arguing for X, and 2 of you chose to attack Y. just wanted to point that out. bye bye.

To all of the people that have commented negatively towards Equinox, I urge you to just try it before passing judgement. I can't explain what makes Equinox different or more inspiring, it just is. You want to be there. You want to reach your fitness goals, and you're given the best tools possible in order to be able to do so. I've never experienced anything like it.

Just try it. You'll see.

think they give out 2 week trial passes?

When I signed up I was concerned about the price. They don't offer week trials, but they set me up with a three day pass and even introduced me to one of the personal trainers that worked there so they could guide me through a sample workout. They were amazing. Once I tried it, I realized the value that you receive in their offering and it was no longer an issue of dollars and cents for me. I recommend going in to check it out.

I used to live in Toronto and did the whole YMCA thing, which was great, a bargain even when I was a student. It was just a few minutes from my condo and even had classes. After moving to NYC, I had to find a gym that I had access to if I moved around. Equinox was it. It has more locations than Reebok, Crunch etc. It's definitely a lot more than I would regularly pay for at the Y, but EUCALYPTUS SCENTED COLD TOWELS. Kidding aside, love that I don't have to bring towels or products. And this also includes classes. When yoga passes run at a minmal from $110 a month, I rather have a gym pass. I used to just pop in for showers during the summer time. In NY, it's $183 and really if it goes past $200, that definitely would be a turn off.

Well you can get a premium membership at the downtown Central YMCA, which includes towel service, razors, shaving cream, etc etc for maybe an extra $20 a month. The premium membership also includes its own change room with your own overnight lockers, squash racket storage, etc. etc.

I guess if you WANT to pay $240 a month for a towel that smells, that's fine. But I would rather save that money to blow during my retirement.
