102.1 the Edge has cancelled the Dean Blundell show

Posted by Derek Flack / January 6, 2014

Dean Blundell Show Cancelled102.1 the Edge has officially cancelled the Dean Blundell Show. Today's news comes after the radio show was suspended back in December for homophobic slurs uttered on air by the show's producer and other personalities. The show has sat in limbo for the last few weeks while Corus deliberated over what to do with it. Today the network made its decision public.

"With the start of the new year, Corus Radio will be taking 102.1 the Edge in a new direction in 2014. The station will return to a more music-based format showcasing the best in modern rock. As a result, The Dean Blundell Show has been cancelled, effective January 6, 2014."

Although Blundell issued an apology after the initial remarks and subsequent controversy, that hasn't mollified his critics or the brass at Corus. The decision to cancel the show has been couched as one related to increasing music-focused programming, but one also suspects that the network finally just got fed up with the shock jock's antics.

Editor: it's Corus, not Chorus. Fix your autocorrect!
Rick / January 6, 2014 at 01:58 pm
Thank god. The Tyranny that was Dean Blundell has finally ended. This Clown deserves this, hopefully his ego isnt bruised too bad.
WhoCares / January 6, 2014 at 02:00 pm
Good Riddance! Show really went downhill when Todd left, hope Dean learned his lesson.
Tim / January 6, 2014 at 02:01 pm
Can Toronto say goodbye to the EDGE now to? Can they just pack the whole station up as an act of kindness.
Sey / January 6, 2014 at 02:07 pm
Sorry but not sorry, bros.
Jenkins / January 6, 2014 at 02:11 pm
First paragraph: 'Chorus.' Second paragraph (which is clearly a copy-and-pasted quote): 'Corus.' Third paragraph: 'Chorus.'

Yes, BlogTO continues to prove that they are a beacon of good editing and journalism in Toronto.

While I am thrilled that this steaming hulk of shit is off the airwaves, I am slightly sad that it will now be more difficult to be able to separate the retarded from the non-retarded in this city. If someone listened to the Dean Blundell Show, it was a good indication that they were a reactionary, ignorant boor that couldn't rub two brain cells together.
Farbsie / January 6, 2014 at 02:12 pm
Most of the good people left 102.1 anyway. As a long time listener I can say since corus took over its just like any top 40 station that plays the same 10 songs 15 times a day. 88.1 has now come and replaced what people loved about cfny for so many years. People don't want pop on an alternative rock station.
Collin Ng / January 6, 2014 at 02:12 pm
while they're at it, can they please fire Greg Beharrel as well. He's not funny and definitely not fun to listen to.
Nameless / January 6, 2014 at 02:16 pm
Good. Maybe finally they'll actually play something good, without repeating it every hour.Good. Maybe finally they'll actually play something good, without repeating it every hour.Good. The joys of Edge repetition. The most annoying thing they did (do?) was "Edge Music: [band that is awesome] [band we play hourly] [band you haven't heard in years] 102.1 The Edge" *play middle song*
Cory / January 6, 2014 at 02:25 pm
Great start to the new year. Fewer mean angry jerks in 2014!
Moneesha / January 6, 2014 at 02:27 pm
102.1 changed their format (originally) in the mid-80s. So any discussion of them playing shit music should start there.
IliveattheVerve / January 6, 2014 at 02:28 pm
people still listen to the radio? I guess that's what you do when you're commuting from the 905, trying to remember what it was like to live in "the city"
Pete / January 6, 2014 at 02:29 pm
Seriously, the last time I listened to 102.1 was in 1991. You didn't know your sh*t in music if you didn't listen to it back in the 80s. After that it turned into just grunge (zzzzz) and only rock. It was more diverse in the 80s. (Do people still listen to the radio?) xo
Rick replying to a comment from Collin Ng / January 6, 2014 at 02:31 pm
Agreed, at first I thought he was really funny, a savant almost.... now I find him to be boring, and not funny at all. I actually change the station when he is on now, cause I cant stand him. Go back to Calgary where that weird dry humor cracks a chuckle out of them cowboys with caked in cow shit in their boots.

GOOD. Juvenile behavior and using comedy as an excuse for homophobia is unacceptable.
The Champ / January 6, 2014 at 02:45 pm
Mrs. Champ and I were back in Toronto for a little while and I wanted to take her shopping for some presents. To earn a little extra cash I decided to get a job as an intern at the Dean Blundell Show along with an old friend, Jackie Muscles.

So we're working in the back room today, sorting some CDs, and the station manager comes in. He mutters something about Dean and a court case and some problem it's causing. And then, as he leaves, he turns to me and yells out:

"Hey Champ! You know this means that I have to lay you and Jack off."

I said, "Pardon?"

Jeff replying to a comment from Tom from TO / January 6, 2014 at 02:48 pm
Agreed! I've switched to Indie88 too
Jesse / January 6, 2014 at 02:55 pm
I thought the Dean Blundell show was pretty much the best part of 102.1 given that most of the music they play contains banjos nowadays.
Cris / January 6, 2014 at 03:03 pm
My kid turned me on to indie88 and it's great.
Althought sometimes the edge files were kinda funny.
Simon Tarses replying to a comment from Tim / January 6, 2014 at 03:08 pm
Exactly my thinking too, Tim. It's time that both stations (Q107 and The Edge) either get with the program and get new blood to run them, or Corus can kill both stations off and sell the frequencies to individuals/organizations that care about radio being more than just being a profit center regurgitating older music from the past (Q107) and playing 90s rock over and over again (The Edge). Let the frequencies be used to play new rock and EDM/electronica (pop's already got most of the dial under its sway) with the older rick being streaming media or something like that.
Nico / January 6, 2014 at 03:11 pm
Finally! Good riddance!

Though with the advent of Indie 88, who needs the Edge any more?
Rob / January 6, 2014 at 03:27 pm
Dean Blundell (eww) aside, the "Corus Radio will be taking 102.1 the Edge in a new direction in 2014. The station will return to a more music-based format showcasing the best in modern rock." is more telling.

I have a feeling 88.1 is kicking their ass more than we know. I've even notice subtle changes in programming, though we still here Guns n Roses and Enter Sandman 10x a day.
Carl J replying to a comment from WhoCares / January 6, 2014 at 03:28 pm
The show did go downhill after Todd was let go (he didn't leave by his own choice), most likely because the station had told Dean to tone it down.

Unfortunately, someone had to be punished, and they chose Todd.
Davis Henderson replying to a comment from blah / January 6, 2014 at 03:30 pm
I listened to Dean and I would challenge you in any competition of mental prowess you could think of. I'd like to see if you would win, smart guy.

Collin Ng replying to a comment from IliveattheVerve / January 6, 2014 at 03:36 pm
there must be something wrong with my car radio then since I'm able to get The Edge driving from my downtown condo to my job in Mississauga.
blue / January 6, 2014 at 03:43 pm
Edge 102 is sh!t without that morning show. Sure it isn't as good as it once was but every other morning show is terrible!!!
Alex / January 6, 2014 at 03:53 pm
Ya, shoot Greg Beharell out the door and maybe it'll be tolerable again aside from the constantly repetitive nature of the music. The only redeeming qualities of the station are Fearless Fred and Adam...the rest, well, is just "the rest"
Bryan / January 6, 2014 at 04:08 pm

Everyone that Corus fired is now there and it reaffirms that the model that Alan Cross had laid out was a model that worked. DB and friends haven't been laugh-out-loud funny for, literally, years. Adam is a douche and Fred, well, I don't mind Fred. Seems like a good guy. But c'mon, everyone loves Bookie.
Bobo / January 6, 2014 at 04:08 pm
I listened to 102.1 The Edge almost daily in the 1990s. I recall a time when was commuting to a new job in the north end from downtown and the music suddenly turned to shit overnight. It was so bad that I started calling in from the car asking WTF had happened.

I just looked it up and, sure enough, Corus took over in 1999. One more example of a bunch of soulless suits pandering to the lowest common denominator and destroying something with heart.

I tuned in to the Dean Blundell show a few times and was gobsmacked at the puerile nonsense passing for entertainment. Good riddance.

Excellent move but way too late. Looks like indie 88 is picking up the slack and the estranged cfny listeners.
Kevin / January 6, 2014 at 04:35 pm
Today, this is a conversation starter. A week from now, it'll be a passing comment. A month from now, it'll be a quick one-liner. Six months from now, no one will care. A year from now, no one will remember who Dean was or why the show got canned. No one is going to march in the streets to bring the show back, write a letter or even call the radio station. Why? because this type of lowest common denominator radio is as disposable as the music it plays.

FM radio used to have soul. Musicians used to pay homage to it. (Spirit of Radio, Radio Gaga, Listen to the Radio, Turn the Radio Up). Today, no one listens because it has become acoustic wallpaper. Music is programmed by computers and based on music sales. Announcers don't have a connection to the genre—most of them know nothing about music and voice track their liners all at once. The natural evolution of this is the shock jock—some foul-mouthed a-hole whose only job is to keep people listening for the next crude insult or stunt. People tune in to hear the antics and quickly forget about it when they turn it off.

The Edge may be a "good" station, but we don't care about good. there's too much "good" on the dial. We only care about great. The sad part of this scenario is that the Edge won't learn—commercial radio is too comfortable with good. Whoever they get to replace Dean and the tripe that was his morning show may be good, and may be popular, but they'll be just as forgettable and irrelevant.
Toronto Jim / January 6, 2014 at 04:38 pm
Try listening to 94 The Rock from Oshawa, like a combo of 102 and 107 but better than both. 88.1 is ok but anything but Indie which I thought meant independent. Surprize it isn't!
Only problem with 94 is you have to live east of downtown to get the signal with any consistency. 102 has not been a good station since the CFNY days, which I grew up with along with Chum FM of the seventies. But I guess that was the dinosaur days for people who read stuff on here. That is why a lot of us oldies listen to Q107.
Bill / January 6, 2014 at 05:08 pm
Good. Now fire every other dj at the station, start playing good music i.e. STOP playing shit like Billy Talent and old 90s crap, and stop calling the station the Edge.
bo_ballie / January 6, 2014 at 05:12 pm
Now if they can just get Josie (and all women in the station) to call it "one oh two point one the edge" instead of "one oh two point one the ahhdge". I'd be good.

Simon Tarses replying to a comment from INDUSTRY DAVE / January 6, 2014 at 06:10 pm
Aww, poor baby-angry that people can't stand radio the way it is now, with stations like The Edge and Q107? Too bad and tough shit; try and improve the product, or bugger off and let somebody who gives a shit and cares about playing music and serving the community take over running radio stations, instead of greedy assholes that only want to milk the commercial jingle teat to get big paydays.

Want big profits? Radio and TV aren't it, sunshine; yes, a radio station owner does have to make a profit to keep things going, but you don't OVERDO it like it's done now with nothing but ads, a hard drive full of songs and 'comment', plus a shock jock spewing bullshit; you provide a studio filled with records and a knowledgeable DJ who broadcasts live on the radio and WHO LOVES THEIR JOB AND LOVES MUSIC/THE SUBJECT THEY TALK ABOUT. That makes radio bland and boring, and drives people away from radio towards things like Grooveshark, Spotifiy, Last.FM, Bittorrent, Bear Share, Kazaa and whatever else that's out there in terms of getting music on the Internet. If you need to make quick profits in a industry/service that truly rewards them and works with/on them, buy a chain of fast food restaurants or video rental kiosks or anything else like that. But leave radio/TV alone to those that really know what the frack they're doing, or, IF you do buy a station, hire talented people to run it and get the fuck out of the way in letting them run it; you'll get GOOD profits from good results, not BAD profits from shitty results like playing a shitload of oldies or that same old Top 40 that can be heard everyplace else on the radio dial.

If anything else, the arrival of Indie 88.1 in Toronto has shown that people want to hear more than just the same old, same old, and it has also shown that radio (and maybe one day TV) like it can thrive; it's time for conglomerates/magnates who have the power to own stations vs. the common person who can't because they don't have the big bucks to realize this fact, and either do as I've said above, or just stay out of radio and TV broadcasting and leave it to the people that care. Otherwise, the industry's going to get left behind by the Internet and what people can do with that, or be swamped by pirate radio/TV stations giving people what they want. The choice, Industry Dave, is yours and that of your comrades in the media, so make the best one.

I find it funny to see how people comment and respond to this article. I listened to the show on and off over years, and I agree the last several years have been kind of lacking, (Although the Edge Files were pretty funny). Also the stuff with the hypnotist proves that Dean wants control but is unwilling to release it himself, which kind of made him a hypocrite, to ask of someone, but unable to do it himself.

However to me it seems as though some of you are bashing and bad mouthing Dean in the same way he has done to other people. If you have a problem with how he did things, you should try to be different instead of doing what you supposedly 'hate' about him. That's just my opinion odds are a bunch of you will disagree with me, and maybe a couple will understand my point. That is what is expected of today, when someone disagrees with a certain view/perspective the recipient tends to go on the attack.

Also I'm making this post really long to see how many people are actually willing to read the whole thing, I find people prefer a single sentence/line for quickness, but limiting yourself is just a form of restraint. For the end I will apologize for making this post much longer than it had to be. Fair Thee Well.

This is terrible news! These guys have worked for years entertaining the entire GTA. No they aren't exactly your "moms" radio station but they did their job well. Listening to them on the drive to work every morning for the last 2 years has made my life that much better. Countless times I've found myself crying of laughter. I'm a 23 year old male so I fit perfectly into their desired audience but I can see how anyone older wouldn't enjoy the show. Yes the show does repeat itself; however that's not the stations fault, it how the trade works now. Wether it be virgin radio, the rock, or even kx96 they all repeat repeat repeat. So you can't pin something like that on the edge alone. The edge isn't perfect but the blundell show used that and made it funny! So thank you Dean and the crew for your contribution to me happiness!

Just wait till you see what's next!
Bob / January 7, 2014 at 01:14 am
To all you saying that people can't take a joke: that's not why the show was suspended. Blundell and producer Derek Welsman were joking about a trial on which Welsman was serving as a jury foreman. He swore to the court that he was not biased, and then proceeded to make jokes on air that were homophobic in nature. It's a legal matter.

So much for freedom of speech in this overly sensitive country. It's really too bad. If I don't like something on tv or the radio I change the station. Too bad people don't realize they don't have to listen to stuff that offends them. Change the channel idiots. The edge is dead to me now. I'm sure it will loose millions of listeners now. And I hope they do. Bye bye edge. Chorus management are a bunch if gutless cowards!!! Ask dean to push the envelope, and when he does ya can him!! Gutless cowards. Good job standing behind your talent.

Negative show, mad at the world guy got smoked
Bandi / January 7, 2014 at 07:41 am
Excellent. Some faith has been restored in humanity.

Now if they could start actually playing alternative rock again and not pop, that'd be great.

88.1 you all say,(many)??? Im going to check it out. I miss old CFNY. I've been fixed on 102 for many, many years. Glad I looked here.
Sasha / January 7, 2014 at 08:21 am
This leaves the final perfect morning radio slot for THE FORD BROTHERS MORNING RADIO HOUR! Toronto needs this... We love Rob, let's get him on the air again!
I miss Robs show!

Rob 2014!

Freedom of speech? Blundell can say whatever the hell he wants. That doesn't mean anybody has to pay him for it, or give him air time. Also, I'm certain Corus looked at his ratings before cancelling the show. If they were higher, I strongly suspect he'd still be on the air.

Nor does that mean there aren't consequences for potentially jeopardizing a legal verdict, as Blundell's idiot producer did.
DL replying to a comment from Roger / January 7, 2014 at 08:53 am
88.1's getting there. It still plays one awful song for one good one, but every now and then they string together a few good ones.

I'd just get Sirius.
Loren / January 7, 2014 at 09:04 am
I am so sad! This is a bad way to start the new years! Now I have nothing to listen to at work!! UGH! Corus made a BIG mistake!
ROB replying to a comment from Sasha / January 7, 2014 at 09:07 am

CommonSense / January 7, 2014 at 09:27 am
For all the people that hated this show...don't you have a dial (or other station changing device) on your radio? Yes? Then use it!
spiritofradio replying to a comment from Deb / January 7, 2014 at 09:54 am
agree with you!!!
spiritofradio replying to a comment from spiritofradio / January 7, 2014 at 09:59 am
Why do you haters keep listening if you did not like it. Change the channel!!. I don't like 99.9 or 104.5, so I don't listen instead of bashing them. Corus is going in a new direction.....downward.....half the music they play is crap so enjoy more Billy Talent everyone....after 30 years as a diehard 102.1 er, I will be at 88.1 where the spirt of radio lives on.....Good luck Dean in your future endevours..
stihl worker / January 7, 2014 at 10:05 am
I stopped listening too The Edge when it stopped being CFNY and hadn't listened to any radio in years until I heard Alan Cross backing 88.1 so I started listening to it for a while until I realized that there was no chance of hearing any music that had an edge to it, it was addif AM radio programming off the 70s had finally found it's way back onto the radio. Too soft and way to precious. So I started listening to 102.1 The Edge as they were billing themselves and found more to like and I continued listening to them for a while, until I felt the change in their programming that was obviously in reaction to the presence of 88.1, the edgier music being set side and far more AM comment being injected. So I went back to my MP3s because there are no stations that will discover the next Skinny Puppy or expose us to Einsterzende Neubauten (sp? ), just the cheap commercial claptrap that is this era's version of Sammy Davis or Mel Forme. n
Donnie replying to a comment from CommonSense / January 7, 2014 at 10:08 am
Yes I have a dial and I also have a CRTC. Get this crap off the air so we can get some quality programming on the air.

You can listen to all of the Shock Jocks you want through web-radio or satellite radio. USE IT.
Jack / January 7, 2014 at 10:17 am
The show was much better with Jason and Todd.

FWIW I gave up on the show when they were still on it. The reason being Dean was giving his opinion more and more and showing how much of a douchebag he is.
LRB replying to a comment from Realist (mostly) / January 7, 2014 at 10:35 am
Actually he cannot just say whatever he wants, at least not on the air. Radio and all broadcasters must adhere to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council or risk losing their CRTC licensing.

Programming on all stations MUST not contain

Gratuitous violence in any form, or otherwise sanction, promote or glamorize violence;

Unduly sexually explicit material; and/or

Unduly coarse and offensive language.

What happened????? to freedom of speech? horrible mistake corus. if you don't like the show you don't have to listen. why are all these people complaining about his 'rude tude' if they don't like it? people are stupid and 102.1 no longer exists on my stero.
love you dean!!
JibberJabber / January 7, 2014 at 10:56 am
Now no reason to listen to that station at all btw people who get offended by things are stupid
buzzchuck / January 7, 2014 at 10:56 am
guess Dean had a little too much edge in him. He was a blowhard hypocrite anyway and maybe now they will at least get stuff like that Lorde crap off a supposedly "New Rock" station.
buzzchuck replying to a comment from stihl worker / January 7, 2014 at 10:59 am
