one fare program

Toronto's one fare program is now in effect and this is how it works

The One Fare Program is officially in effect in Toronto and the surrounding area and, as with anything new, people have questions about it.

Here's everything you need to know about using Ontario's new One Fare Program.

What is One Fare?

One Fare is a new program, announced earlier this year, that will allow passengers to transfer between a number of different transit systems in Ontario, but only pay once.

What transit systems apply?

Under the One Fare program, commuters can transfer between the TTC and GO Transit, as well as regional transit systems like Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, MiWay and York Region Transit.

How does it work?

When transferring between the TTC and GO Transit, your TTC fare will be free, and when you transfer between the TTC and other local transit systems, your second fare will be free.

You'll be automatically discounted for the trip when you tap your PRESTO card —essentially, it's the same thing as the free two-hour transfers already in effect on the TTC.

Your transfer will remain valid for two hours if you start your trip on a local transit system, or three hours for trips started on GO Transit.

Can I still use One Fare without a PRESTO card?

If you, like me, are frequently guilty of leaving your PRESTO card at home, the One Fare program has got you covered. The system will still apply when passengers pay using credit or debit.

If you're a frequent commuter, Metrolinx estimates that the One Fare program could save you an average of $16oo a year, and heaven knows many Toronto residents could do with a little extra change in their pockets.

The introduction of the One Fare program is part of Metrolinx's long-term strategy for sustainability and improved public transit service in the province.
